Parents of Toronto High School students were informed of a bed bug being found on a student on Tuesday, leaving them with questions about what the school is doing to make sure the school is clear of bed bugs.

Toronto City Schools superintendent Fred Burns wants parents to know that they have taking all the necessary precautions and he wants to bust the myths about bed bugs.

We have confirmed a case of bedbugs. It occurred here on Tuesday. We actually took it and had it analyzed by Rose Pest Control and they confirmed it was a bed bug, Burns said.

On Wednesday, a dog trained to find bed bugs came to sniff the school buildings for signs of these pests and Rose Pest Solutions came to make sure there were no signs of any bed bugs.

The dogs sniffed out the fact that it could have possibly had the odor of being on somebodys shoe. They definitely didnt find anything in searching the area in both buildings, Burns said.

Local exterminators said its a difficult process to get rid of bed bugs and anyone can get them.

Definitely a difficult process, one of the main things that I think is the biggest problem with the bed bugs is people not being aware that they are here, its a very big issue. Theres stigmas that go along with bed bugs as far as people being dirty and other things like that and thats totally untrue. Anybody and everybody is susceptible to getting bed bugs, T.J. Wright, a lead exterminator for the Pest Detective said.

Burns wants parents to know that their children are safe in the school.

School takes precautionary measures for bed bugs

TORONTO - The administration at the city junior/senior high school is taking precautions today after bedbugs were discovered in a classroom Tuesday.

One of the bugs was subsequently taken to Rose Pest Control to be identified after several small bugs were discovered in a classroom. School officials believe they've also discovered the source of the pests, according to Maureen Taggart, school principal and district communications coordinator. and Fred Burns, superintendent.

"Rose Pest Control is coming in today," Burns said.

Taggart sent an e-mail to parents notifying them of the discovery as well as precautions taken to minimize the risk of the bugs spreading. In the e-mail, Taggart told parents a student had been taken to the school nurse, items were removed from that student's locker and the room was closed to pupils and students to be disinfected.

"The Jefferson County Health Department was notified," reads the e-mail. "They indicated that we had taken all the recommended precautionary measures. They said that students are no more at risk of picking up these bugs while attending school than they are going to a movie theater, restaurant, grocery store or other public facility."

"This was probably brought in by the student's coat," said Burns, adding several small bite marks were discovered on the student's skin. "(Rose Pest Control) will come in today with dogs specifically trained to detect bedbugs. We can't spray the room yet because the dog wouldn't then be able to detect any bedbugs.

"That family (of the student) is staying home until they are checked out," continued Burns, adding the family will be checked by physicians.

"(The bugs) like to be in the dark," said Burns, adding bedbugs today have a stigma similar to lice. "It could happen to anybody."

People are getting bed bugs in more and more places throughout the city. When it comes to being aware of where one might be exposed to bed bugs there are the obvious places such as movie theatres and hotels, yet we are seeing people picking up bed bugs from mass transit, restaurants, medical clinics, hospitals, taxi's and even their own relatives that are unaware that they even have a bed bug problem!

One way to describe the bed bug problem in Toronto would be to say that, just like getting a common cold, when you step outside of your front door you run the risk of being exposed to bed bugs. Yes, this is a relatively new concept to us living in North America but the problem is here and it's here to stay for the foreseeable future.

Basic precautions can and should be taken when returning home from vacation and after visiting known 'hotspots' for bed bugs. Do Not bring your suitcase into your house and unload it onto your bed after returning from vacation. All articles should be removed in the garage (or on the porch etc.), put into garbage bags and dried on 'high' for one hour prior to exposing them to your home for instance. This will go a long way to reducing the chances that you will bring bed bugs into your home.
