Columbus keeps climbing in the ranks of the nations most bedbug-infested cities, according to major pest-control companies.

The city rose to No. 3 on the latest list from Orkin, which ranks metro areas by the number of bedbug treatments the company performed last year.

Terminix says bedbug-specific calls in Columbus jumped by 47 percent from January through May last year, compared with the same period in 2012. That hike was the fourth-highest, the company said.

It should be of concern to our public officials, said Susan Jones, an Ohio State University entomologist and bedbug expert. It is getting worse as we speak.

Jones and other members of the all-volunteer Central Ohio Bed Bug Task Force say the absence of public funding for bedbug awareness and eradication hampers efforts to fight what has become an epidemic.

The tenacious, blood-sucking, hard-to-kill insects inflict misery most everywhere they go. Households that cant pay for professional extermination services are most likely to suffer, because home remedies and over-the-counter products generally dont work well.

Cities need to address this issue because it is a communitywide problem, with schools, hospitals, movie theaters and other public places always at risk, Jones said. And the state health department needs to provide guidance.

Of the top seven cities on Orkins list, four areas are in Ohio. Cincinnati is No. 5, Cleveland/Akron/Canton is sixth, and Dayton is seventh.

Chicago took the top spot on Orkins list. The nations biggest city, New York, was No. 17, down from 10th place in 2012. Columbus rose three spots from 2012 to last year.

Bedbugs are small, oval, brownish insects that live on the blood of animals or humans. Adult bedbugs have flat bodies about the size of an apple seed. After feeding, however, their bodies swell and are a reddish color.

Bedbugs do not fly, but they can move quickly over floors, walls, and ceilings. Female bedbugs may lay hundreds of eggs, each of which is about the size of a speck of dust, over a lifetime.

Immature bedbugs, called nymphs, shed their skins five times before reaching maturity and require a meal of blood before each shedding. Under favorable conditions the bugs can develop fully in as little as a month and produce three or more generations per year.

Although they are a nuisance, they do not transmit diseases.

Bedbugs may enter your home undetected through luggage, clothing, used beds and couches, and other items. Their flattened bodies make it possible for them to fit into tiny spaces, about the width of a credit card. Bedbugs do not have nests like ants or bees, but tend to live in groups in hiding places. Their initial hiding places are typically in mattresses, box springs, bed frames, and headboards where they have easy access to people to bite in the night.

Over time, however, they may scatter through the bedroom, moving into any crevice or protected location. They may also spread to nearby rooms or apartments.

Because bedbugs live solely on blood, having them in your home is not a sign of dirtiness. You are as likely to find them in immaculate homes and hotel rooms as in filthy ones.

Bedbugs are active mainly at night and usually bite people while they are sleeping. They feed by piercing the skin and withdrawing blood through an elongated beak. The bugs feed from three to 10 minutes to become engorged and then crawl away unnoticed.

Most bedbug bites are painless at first, but later turn into itchy welts. Unlike flea bites that are mainly around the ankles, bedbug bites are on any area of skin exposed while sleeping. Also, the bites do not have a red spot in the center like flea bites do.

Bed bugs were discovered in a boarding house in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, said a report from patch.com. In light of it, My Cleaning Products recommended the use of pesticide-exempt Bed Bug Bully to anyone dealing with the critters stating that it could help kill bed bugs effectively without the risks of strong chemical ingredients.

The news was published on the website on March 02, 2014. And as it detailed, the critters were discovered after an inspection was recently implemented in the building.

It was said in the report that the last permit to operate the housing got on December 16 of last year expired on Tuesday. Because of that, it stated that it was seeking to renew its license. However, based on the news, along with the neighbors' disapproval, the bed bugs in the property could likely impend the renewal of its permit.

A boarding house in Portsmouth, New Hampshire was seeking to renew its permit to operate. However, because of the bed bugs found in the building, things aren't looking good for the management.

Due to previous incidents discovery of dead body, bomb scare and service complaints - the City Council extends Brewster Street's permit only in an interim basis rather than the usual one year. And the last approved extension it got was on December 16, which expired last Tuesday.

According to My Cleaning Products, bed bug bites could leave a person scratching all the time. Moreover, it said that those critters could also cause sleepless nights for the paranoia and anxiety that it could bring. In short, their presence could make any residence an inhabitable place, it concluded.

Because of that, MCP said that wherever bed bugs are, they must be eliminated. And as it stressed, the elimination of them must be prompt and efficient. Else, they would multiply and cause even more problems, it stated.

However, in order to kill bed bugs promptly and effectively, the company asserted that one would need Bed Bug Bully. It said that as a bed bug spray, it could make the bed bug treatment fast and easy to complete.

Woman claims Bed Bugs Came With Rented Couch

Kalynn Trammell was renting to own a couch for her Brazoria apartment hoping to find comfort. Instead she says all she found was a pack of unwanted pests -- Bed bugs and clusters of bed bug eggs. "It's just been hell. It's disgusting," she said.

Now she has dozens of bite marks all over he body. "I've got 'em on my leg, I've got 'em on my back, inner thigh, legs here... 30 to 40 bites, all resulting in scars," she said. She's even staying with a neighbor and sleeping on the floor because her apartment has yet to be disinfected.

Trammell thinks she had an allergic reaction to the bites and is now covered with bumps and scars. "Every bite has resulted in a scar, I have to look at it for the rest of my life. I look like I've been doing drugs," said Trammell.

The Rent-A-Center in Clute where she got the furniture took the couch away, refunded her payment, and sent an exterminator out to inspect her apartment. But he did not spray it. A company spokesperson tells Fox 26 News they believe the bed bugs were already there claiming bugs were found in the baseboards, outlets and mattress. "No they were not, I've been here for 2 years. They were not in my home prior," said Trammell.

The spokesperson goes on to say that their stores go to "great lengths" to sanitize all furniture before it's rented. Trammell thinks they missed hers. "Right now I want them to exterminate my home, I want my furniture and I want this past me, I don't want to deal with it no more because it's been a nightmare for me," she said.

Rent-A-Center says they want to make their customers happy, but they don't have a definitive answer to who's at fault in this case.
