The Cameron Motel, one of Denver’s creepiest, has been demolished as luxury apartments rise on the University Hills site – Denverite
Welcome to the land of promise.
In a review, one customer described the Cameron Motel, at 4500 E. Evans Ave., as the worst place Ive been in my life. Another wrote: Dirty, Poor lighting, Cold, Scary. A third cautioned: Stay away.
Despite iconic neon signs visible from I-25 and a reputation as a family-run alternative to sterile chains, the Cameron Motel, built in the University Hills neighborhood in the late 50s, wasnt known as one of Denvers brighter spots or cleanest.
Inside, bedbugs bushwhacked human hair stuck on cigarette-burned, snot-stained comforters. Dirt chunks clung to the carpet. Rust encrusted the baseboard heaters. Electrical outlets zapped customers. Their feet itched with fungus lingering on the floor. Their legs swelled with bug bites. Drug users used and dealers dealt. The friendly owners pit bull lunged at patrons when they dared ask for a refund.
Absolutely no refunds, a sign at the desk noted.
It was a horrific motel, said Aurora resident Kathy Groth, who works at a food bank and often houses homeless people. I was only in one of the rooms once. And not for very long. But my son knew people who stayed there. And that kind of a place is the last stop before living in your car. So they tore it down, put all those people on the streets, and are building luxury apartments there. Welcome to the land of promise.
The new projects name? Cameron a trendy one-word nod to the demolished motel.
The project was funded in 2020 with $67 million in financing from JLL Capital Markets and is being developed by Austin, Texas Cypress Real Estate Advisors and Denvers Flywheel Capital.
There will be 30 studio, 239 one-bedroom and 92 two-bedroom apartments for rent, according to JLL Capital Markets. Construction workers are putting the finishing touches on the building now, and it is slated to open later this year.
The project will also include a resort-style pool with cabanas and grilling stations, a clubroom, courtyards, a fitness center, and a business cafe.
The Cameron Motel site has been enclosed by netting and is being used as staging for construction. JLL Capital Markets noted that the rest of the 5.35-acre plot will be developed in a second stage.
The new development is sandwiched between I-25, warehouses, strip malls and a largely single-family residential neighborhood. The developers are celebrating their buildings proximity to the Colorado Light Rail Station.
The Cameron Motel now lives in memories largely, bad ones except for the neon signs.
The signs from the motel that used to be there are still there, Groth said, as if theyre preserving those as historic.
Awesome Kong opens up about her difficult departure from WWE and what she needed from them to stay.
It was reported at the closing end of 2010 that Awesome Kong had signed with WWE. She made her debut at the 2011 Extreme Rules PPV, attacking Michelle McCool after a match. A few weeks later, Awesome Kong shocked the WWE Universe when she revealed that she was pregnant and needed to take a leave of absence.
It was confirmed in July 2012 that Awesome Kong was released from the company. Although Kong has remained quiet on the subject for quite some time, the former Knockouts Champion has finally broken her silence regarding her WWE departure.
Speaking on Insight with Chris Van Vliet, Awesome Kong opened up about what occurred leading up to her departure from the company and how she struggled emotionally following the loss of her child. She also discussed the politics in WWE, saying it was ultimately too much to handle.
Well after losing my baby emotionally and psychologically, I was not in the place physically, emotionally, and physiologically to deal with the okie doke. Now I say the okie doke, anybody who has had a WWE contract knows what that is. It is the politics, the mind games, the expectations, and the standard that you have to live up to. Im not saying that it is bad, but it is vigorous, and I wasnt up for the okie doke.
Im not into playing games, especially with what I had gone through. First my mother had gone, cancer, then my grandmother gone, my best friend from high school suddenly, my manager, God rest his soul, gone. Then now my baby was gone, and that is a lot of death back to back. I hadnt taken time off, I was just me being me.
The day we buried my mother, I went straight to the airport for Bound for Glory. So it was working, and the way they wanted me to come back was not healthy. I was like you can bring me straight back so I can go into autopilot and work, or let me go somewhere where I can really process all of this.
A lot of people like to paint WWE as the villains, but it is not as easy as that, it is very nuanced and archaic. For the most part, they were extremely supportive, they were invested in someone, excited about it, and it didnt turn out the way that they wanted it to. And of course just my luck, Mystico had to go and fall every damn week. Im like get it together, Triple H just got this job, you are falling and its not looking good right now, this sucks!
At the end, they asked me what do you need to come back, and I told them what I needed. It was very simple, it wasnt money, I felt bad that they were still paying me. But no they were going to pay me, and I told them I needed to go to a facility in Colorado because they wanted me to lose the baby weight. There is a facility where The Biggest Loser people train, it was just a coincidence. It had what I needed to get my physical and emotional well-being in alignment so I can go back quickly.
I told them and I told them I would pay for it. They called me back and said that they were going to send me down to Florida for a while, and thats the opposite of what I need! They send down there to a hotel that was filled with roaches and bed bugs. They do change and send me to a nice place, but it was so not what I needed, it was never going to work.
After departing from WWE, Awesome Kong wrestled on the independent circuit and in Japan for years. She would later be signed to AEW but ultimately left the company after taking a hiatus to film scenes for the popular Netflix series, GLOW. Awesome Kong announced her retirement from professional wrestling in August of 2021.

What are bed bugs?
Bed bugs are insects that feed on the blood of people and animals. Bed bugs do not cause any diseases, but are a nuisance and can be uncomfortable. Bed bugs are also highly contagious.
The scientific name for bed bugs is Cimex lectularius. They are small, brownish red, flat bugs. They can live for months without feeding.
The physical symptoms of bed bugs are the presence of bug bites. However, some people do not react to the bug bites and may not notice them. Others may have a stronger allergic reaction to them that may require medical attention. Most people do not notice the bug bites until a few days after they occur because the insects inject an anesthetic, a substance that induces insensitivity to pain, before biting.
Bed bugs spread by traveling on items from infested areas. They often travel in clothing or suitcases, but can also travel on furniture, boxes, or linens.
There are many ways you can lower the risk of getting bed bugs:
Anyone can get bed bugs. Getting bed bugs is not related to the cleanliness of your environment. They have been found in luxurious hotels, at movie theaters, and on airplanes, all of which are cleaned regularly. They gather where people sleep, hiding during the day, and coming out at night to feed.

Treatments for bed bugs
The best way to get rid of bed bugs permanently is to work with a pest control professional to come up with a plan that combines home remedies and professional pesticide solutions.
Here are things you can do at home to help bed bugs stay away:
Heat is one of the best ways to kill bed bugs. Pest experts use professional heating elements to kill bedbugs. You can also use a steam cleaner with a diffuser to kill bed bugs hiding in fabrics and baseboards.
Vacuuming can suck up bed bugs but it doesn't kill them. Make sure to seal the vacuum bag or trash bag with tape and immediately throw out in the garbage outside of your house.
Heat kills bed bugs and so does prolonged exposure to cold temperatures of zero degrees Fahrenheit. You can freeze items like electronics that do not have LCD screens, pictures, books, shoes, and toys. Place the items in a sealed plastic bag prior to freezing and make sure to freeze items for at least four days straight.
In order to keep bed bugs at bay, you need to be vigilant. Keep checking to see if your efforts have worked. If any bed bug eggs are present after treatment, they can come back, so vigilance is key. Experts recommend checking at least once a week for a while after the primary infestation is gone.
Bed bugs are a nuisance for most people. However, some people who have allergic reactions to bed bug bites may need medical treatment for the bites. Getting bed bugs doesn't mean you or your home are dirty. You can get rid of bed bugs with the help of a professional using pesticides, and at-home treatment with vigilance.

In collaboration with community partners, LCBH staff attorneys have prepared a sample bed bug infestation notice and instructions for use. Please read and understand the instructions prior to using this sample letter.
Under the Chicago Bed Bug Ordinance, a tenant who sees or suspects bed bugs in their unit must notify the landlord in writing, within 5 days.
The bed bug ordinance applies to all rental units.
You should copy/paste or re-type the letter and include the date, your name, the landlords name, etc. where indicated.
You should use the rent deduction section of this letter only if you live in a unit that is NOT excluded from the Chicago Residential Landlord and Tenant Ordinance (RLTO). Exclusions include:
If your unit is excluded from the RLTO, you cannot use the rent reduction section of the letter and may only use the bed bug portion of the letter. If you live in a unit that is funded by a subsidy you should consult with the subsidy provider before including the rent reduction portion of the letter.
If you are not sure whether you can reduce your rent contact an attorney at the Lawyers Committee for Better Housing, other legal aid agency, or the Metropolitan Tenants Organization.
You should consult with an attorney or an expert on rent reductions before deciding what amount to deduct. It is important to be conservative when deducting money from your rent because you may have to justify this amount before a judge in an eviction court case, and the outcome in any case is uncertain.
Additionally, it is a good idea that if you choose to deduct that you keep the money in an escrow account in the event that a judge orders you to pay the amount because you have deducted too much or cannot justify deduction.
The Bed Bug Ordinance also provides that tenants have an obligation to cooperate with the landlord to eradicate the bed bugs. This means you cannot interfere with any inspections. You must grant access, make necessary preparations, and dispose of any personal property that is untreatable (unless you live in an assisted living or shared housing establishment).
Once the letter is complete, deliver it to your landlord in person or mail it to the proper address.
Keep a dated copy of the letter for your records.
