Chicago Tops Bed Bug Cities List for Third Year in a Row
ATLANTA, Jan. 21, 2015 /PRNewswire/ --Chicago tops the 2014 Bed Bug Cities List for the third year in a row. The list, released by pest control leader Orkin, ranks the cities by the number of bed bug treatments Orkin performed from January to December 2014. Bed bugs were in the news throughout 2014 in the Windy City, with reports of the blood-sucking insects on public transit and inside several downtown office buildings, as well as in police headquarters, a fire station, school, library and movie theater.
"Bed bugs are a serious issue across the country, and they're very difficult to control," said Orkin Entomologist and Technical Services Director Ron Harrison, Ph.D. "Bed bugs are not limited to any level of cleanliness or income, which means they can be found in any home or hotel. They're great hitchhikers, and people often bring them inside on their clothes or in their luggage."
Seven cities made double-digit jumps on Orkin's Bed Bug Cities List compared to 2013, including Omaha, Neb. (+16), Lexington, Ky. (+16), Sacramento, Calif. (+14), Grand Rapids, Mich. (+13), Buffalo, N.Y. (+12), Charleston, W.Va. (+11) and Louisville, Ky. (+10). Several cities also dropped significantly in the past year, including Syracuse, N.Y., San Diego, Miami, Greenville, S.C. and Atlanta. Four cities made the Bed Bug Cities List for the first time including Myrtle Beach, S.C., St. Louis, Bowling Green, Ky. and Ft. Wayne, Ind.
Bed bugs are in every region of the country, and Orkin has treated for bed bugs in all 50 states. Rollins, Orkin's parent company, saw an 18 percent increase in bed bug revenue in 2014. The problem is growing nationwide as well. According to an annual report on the pest control industry, Americans spent $446 million to get rid of bed bugs in 2013, the latest data available, compared to $70 million in 2004.
While the cities above topped Orkin's list, homeowners, tenants and travelers across the country should take the following precautions to help prevent bed bugs:
At Home:
During travel, remember the acronym S.L.E.E.P. to inspect for bed bugs:
Bed bugs are not known to spread human disease like many other pests, but can leave itchy, bloody welts on skin, and they are active year-round. Because every bed bug scenario is different, it's important for homeowners to call a professional who can create a solution tailored to their home's needs.

Bed bug detecting dogs back at work
WINNIPEG The sniffing service dogs that were stolen Monday in Winnipeg are back at work Tuesday.
Cooper works to sniff out bed bugs at a Manitoba Housing complex but just over 24-hours ago, he was one of 10 bed bug and drug detection dogs that disappeared after someone stole the vehicle they were in.
Theyre from Toronto but were in Winnipeg working for the province when the bright yellow, ambulance-style truck the dogs were in was stolen from a Pembina Highway hotel.
James Artibello, with A-scent K9 Detection Service, says the dogs would have barked non-stop and says the thieves unscrewed one of the kennels from the floor to get the dogs out.
It would take great lengths to get them out, everythings bungee corded together, said Artibello.
Within hours, residents helped police find all 10 dogs, roaming the streets in St. Vital. Artibello was reunited with his pups but it would take longer to find his truck.
At 4:20 p.m. Winnipeg police were patrolling the West End when they spotted Artibellos yellow ambulance-style vehicle in a back lane off Young Street. It had a couple bumps and scrapes but otherwise left in good shape.
They bumped into something there, said Antibello pointing at a new scrape, they could have done worse damage.
Artibello admits his vehicle was running with the doors locked when it was stolen.
I have to leave the dogs, I cant bring 10 dogs into a hotel.

Bed bugs are year-round small insects that feed on human blood. They are usually active at night when people are sleeping. They have flat, rusty-red colored oval bodies, no wings and are about the size of an apple seed. They are big enough to be easily seen, but hide in mattresses, box springs, bedding, cracks in furniture, floors, or walls. When bed bugs feed, they swell and become brighter red. They can live for several months to over a year without feeding. They don't jump or fly, and they crawl and move about the same speed as an ant. Below are some commonly asked questions about bed bugs: WHAT DO BED BUGS LOOK LIKE? In any infestation, you will find bed bugs in several stages of development. An adult bed bug is relatively easy to see as it is about the size of an apple seed, and resembles the shape of a small tick. It is in the juvenile stages that bed bugs are hardest to see. In the first stage from the egg, they have no color and will blend in with their surroundings. After their first blood meal, they will have a dark brownish color but still be tiny - about the size of a large piece of sand.

Bed Sized Bed Bug Trap LLC Develops New Trap with the Goal of Bed Bug Extinction
Princeton Jct, NJ (PRWEB) January 20, 2015
Bed Sized Bed Bug Trap LLC has invented a nonchemical trap that stops bed bug bites on the first day and kills 100 percent of them in weeks. This new trap has been fashioned to make traditional methods of bed-bug control, such as pesticides, vacuuming, organic remedies, zippered mattresses, and steam cleaning, obsolete. Dahai Dong, the companys founder, said the ultimate goal is to force the bed bug into extinction.
Dahai Dong invented the trap when his home was infested, and he needed to keep his sleeping area bed bug free. At first, he used various sticky tapes to build a barrier around the bed, but the effort failed because the pests crawled over them. He then used fly-catching tape, but this effort also proved unsuccessful as the tape left an uncomfortable residual on his skin and blanket. His third design, however, was a success, resulting in a one-of-a-kind trap that formed an invisible barrier between the bed bugs and him.
This trap, playfully called Bed Bug Terminator, is a special cover placed directly on the bed. The cover is crafted with an edge of special double-sided tape, one which leaves no residue behind. It comes in twin, full, queen, and king sizes, and the trap can be assembled in minutes with a few quick and easy steps.
When bed bugs travel toward the bed, attracted by the warmth and carbon dioxide produced by the sleeper, the sticky edge ensnares them, ensuring they never reach their human meal. Since pests survive off blood alone, any trapped critters soon starve, preventing them from repopulating the home with future generations.
The companys method also includes extra double-sided tape to further protect the house. When placed on the beds headboard as well as chair and furniture legs, this tape provides an extra layer of defense against the infestation.
Bed Sized Bed Bug Trap has received many questions about its products and bed bugs. Here is a list of FAQs and the companys answers.
Q: How do you stop bed bug bites within 24 hours?
A: More than 99% bed bug feedings occur at night. This trap eliminates that chance. Bed bugs are not likely to seek food during the daytime. It is easy to keep ones body free of bed bugs with some effort, such as applying sticky tape to furniture legs and taking a shower before sleep. If your body picks up a bed bug after sitting on a sofa, you can easily feel it and notice the biting sign on your skin. Taking a shower and heating your clothes in the dryer will make your body bed bug free again.
Q: I heard bed bugs can live for one year without a bloody meal. Is this true?

Most people do not know that they have a bed bug problem until after they have been bitten. Bed bugs hide in cracks and crevices during the day where they can remain unseen; they traditionally come out at night to feed. Bed bugs can fit in a crevice the width of a playing card, and reportedly they can live for a year or more without feeding. They hide in places like mattresses, box springs, headboards, upholstered items. baseboards, wall voids and in cluttered surroundings.
Nearly all of us have heard the saying before, typically when we were children, and most of us believed that bed bugs were nothing more than a myth. Unfortunately, this is not the case. Bed bugs, Cimex lectularius, have become a huge problem in recent years for many businesses in the United States; including hotels, office buildings, movie theatres, multi-family dwellings, and even for residential homeowners. They are elusive, difficult to find, and very resilient, making them much more difficult to control than other common household pests.
Bed bugs are parasitic insects that feed on blood, and as the name indicates typically are found in or near areas where humans sleep, or spend extended periods of time, such as couches, and office chairs, or even auditorium seating in movie theatres, and other similar situations. They are nocturnal in nature, typically coming out at night to feed, but will adapt quickly to their surroundings and adjust their feeding patterns to feed in the daytime if necessary. Bed bugs can cause multiple health issues, including severe rashes, allergic reactions, sleep loss, and other psychological effects.
