Worst cities for bed bugs: Grand Rapids-Kalamazoo crawling up the list
GRAND RAPIDS, MI -- Bed bugs are apparently gaining ground in Michigan, according to pest control company Orkin, which issued its list of the top 50 worst cities when it comes to bed bug infestations.
Detroit climbed two spots to second place on the 2015 list, behind Chicago. Last year, Michigans largest city ranked third for cities with the largest increase in infestations on a list put out by Terminix, another national pest control company.
But these blood-sucking insects are on the rise on the west side of the state as well, according to Orkin.
Grand Rapids, Kalamazoo and Battle Creek tied for the 20th spot on 2015 list, moving the region up 13 places in the national ranking.
The Atlanta-bases exterminator says the list is based on data from cities where Orkin performed the most bed bug treatments in 2014.
Overall, the country is in the midst of a bed bug resurgence, with Americans spending $446 million to get rid of bed bugs in 2013, compared to $70 million 10 years ago, according to industry data.
Trying to quantify the problem locally is difficult.
The Kent County Health Department does not monitor bed bug complaints because they are not considered a public health threat, said Lisa LaPlante, the countys communications director.
I would definitely say there has been an increase, said David Popp, with Rose Pest Control Solutions. Theres has been a steady increase over the last five or six years.
The Troy-based company, located in states across the Midwest and the South, has offices across Michigan in Grand Rapids, Kalamazoo, Lansing, Niles, Saginaw and Metro Detroit.

Milwaukee challenging Orkin report that bed bugs are on the rise
MILWAUKEE -- The extermination company Orkin is out with a report that ranks Milwaukee as 16th in the nation when it comes to bed bugs, up six spots from the year before. But the city said the report is misleading.
"This is a marketing ploy to hype the problem of bed bugs," said Todd Weiler, spokesman for Milwaukee's Deparment of Neighborhood Services.
Weiler said Orkin never contacted the City to get its data.
"What they are quoting is the number of treatments they applied in the various cities. What it does not show you is what are the actual trends, what are the actual numbers, whether bed bugs are growing or not."
Weiler said bed bug cases have not changed much from 2013 to 2014.
"Verified complaints dropped from 286 to 278 for a difference of 8 or -2.80 perecent change. I rate the trend as flat holding at about the same rate."

Virginia Bed Bug Heat Treatment Company Environmental Heat …
Bed bugs are in the news for infesting hotels and taxis in New York, but have also become a local problem in Virginia. One father is pushing the theater to address the problem.
Purcellville, VA -- (ReleaseWire) -- 08/21/2014 -- Recently, according to WFSB.com, a father in Virginia took his daughters to their local theater. Upon leaving the theater, the man and his daughters discovered bite marks on their arms and legs. The upset father, concerned about transporting bugs home, addressed the situation to the theater manager who arranged for the family to travel to Wal-Mart in a taxi for new clothes.
Grateful for the service, the man was nevertheless dismayed that the theaters bed bug problem wasnt previously addressed, and movie-goers were not informed of the infestation. As the man said, That whole theater should be closed.
Homeowners and business owners know fumigation is typically used to eliminate unwanted pests. The father in this situation presented fumigation as a logical solution when discussing his ordeal. However, Environmental Heat Solutions wants to remind people that toxic treatments are not the only available solution. Bed bug heat treatments are a safer alternative to chemical pesticides and are more effective on commercial and residential infestations. Bed bug heat treatments, a chemical-free alternative, use extreme heat to kill bed bugs in all stages of life. Bed bugs are susceptible to heat, and prolonged use of heat in excess of 115 degrees Fahrenheit removes infestations safely.
For businesses, bed bug infestations, or even rumors of infestation, hurt businesses. Fumigation tents, necessary for fumigation treatments, eliminate discreet treatment. After a large breakout of bed bug infestations in New York in 2010, hotels and businesses had to battle the bugs and keep a good reputation. Lawsuits regarding the spread of bed bugs from business to home have increased too, adding to the pressure of treating infestations quickly and quietly. Heat treatment for bed bugs is a fast and discreet solution for businesses and homeowners when time is a factor.
