Woman sleeps with bedbugs for 5 years in name of science

VANCOUVER, British Columbia A woman invited bedbugs into her bed for five years, all in the name ofscience.

According to KCPQ, Regine Gries has been bitten by more than 1,000 bedbugs each week for the last five years.

180,000 bites later, her sacrifice has paid off.

Gries and her husband Gerhard, both biologist at Simon Fraiser University in Vancouver British Columbia, say they have figured out how to attract and repel the bloodsucking parasites.

After years of research, they foundthat histamine effectively repelled the tiny insects.

While histamine stops the bugs in their tracks, the scientists say they have five other odors that attract bedbugs and couldbe used to lurethem into traps.

They areworking on a formula that can be sold commercially, which means Griesis still feeding the bedbugs every week.

Im not too thrilled about this, she said, but knowing how much this technology will benefit so many people, its all worth it.

Woman allows thousands of bedbugs to feed on her over 5 years, makes incredible discovery

VANCOUVER, British Columbia Regine Gries has been bitten by more than 1,000 bedbugs each week for the last five year and she allowed it to happen.

In fact, Gries welcomed the 180,000 bites.

Now her literal blood sacrifice has paid off. She and her husband Gerhard, both biologist at Simon Fraiser University in Vancouver British Columbia, say they have figured out how to attract and repel the bloodsucking parasites.

It turns out bed bugs communicate by odor. The researchers have been able to identify that histamine effectively repelled the creepy creatures.

They also discovered five odors that attract bedbugs and could be used to draw them into death traps.

Thats where Regine Gries blood comes back into the story. She sacrificed her own skin night after night as part of the experimentation process to feed the bugs they were using in their research.

But her blood, sweat and probably tears may all have been worth it for people plagued by the beasts.

A Victoria British Columbia company, Contech Enterprises, is now developing what is being called the first affordable bait and trap for detecting and monitoring infestations.

Contech expects it to be commercially available next year.

Bed bug infestation becomes major problem for local family

CLINTON, Tenn. (WVLT)-- Danae Phelps is worried about her mother living at The Village of Carriage Hills in Clinton because she has a big problem: bed bugs.

"It's been going on and off for almost a year and my mother said that they [the apartment complex] have come out and sprayed. However, to my knowledge that's not how you handle a bed bug problem, you use heat," said Phelps.

The site manager at the complex wasn't allowed to go on camera because of company policy. But she did tell us they follow the guidelines set by Rural Development of Tennessee.

In Phelps mother's case, they got the complaint and wrote a formal letter to the mother with a checklist of things to do within 5 to 7 days.

After that, the complex came in and sprayed cedar oil. And according to reports, most of the times it does the job for the complex - but Phelps said the cedar oil didn't work for them.

We contacted Mark Nadolski from Russell's Pest Control for expert advice concerning bedbugs and cedar oil.

"There's some studies that say cedar oil does work. It's enviromentally safe but it's also a product that you can apply without having a licenses through the state of Tennesse," he said.

So what's the best solution to get rid of these pesky bugs?

"They can't survive over about 115 degrees so we use a steamer- something you;d find in a clothing store and that will typically kill the bed bugs we see and it will kill the eggs. We also use a pesticide after the steam treatment," Nadolski said.

But it's not a one time deal, he notes - sometimes it takes numerous treatments because bed bugs are stubborn and can hide in the smallest places.

Bed Bugs Conference on HUD Requirements By AudioSolutionz Gets a Tremendous Response

Durham, NC (PRWEB) January 07, 2015

Shattering all previous records, the webinar titled What does HUD Say About Bed Bugs?, hosted by AudioSolutionz on December 17, 2014, with expert speaker Debbie Hixon, was attended by more than 500 participants across the United States.

Debbie, an industry veteran with over 25 years of experience in the Affordable Housing Industry, spoke at length about the problem of bed bugs and the HUDs take on the problem. She provided guidance to attendees on the rights and responsibilities of owners, management agents, HUD and tenants on the topic.

The session was attended by 300 live attendees and more than 200 DVD and transcripts orders poured in during the duration of the event. Post-session, AudioSolutionz is also witnessing a great interest in the pre-recorded version, DVDs and transcripts of the webinar. Mainly promoted through the website http://www.assistedhousingalert.com, a part of AudioSolutionz, a 100% increase in traffic was witnessed on the website within the period of Nov 5 to Dec 17 (the day of the conference).

Debbie Hixon, who travels throughout the country to train people on various HUD topics, commented on the great response the webinar received, The response was overwhelming but not unexpected. Since HUD has released two notices and much written information on this issue, owners, management agents, tenants, and HUD-insured or assisted housing staff must be certain that they are carrying out all requirements. She also added that in accordance with project Regulatory Agreements and Section 8 HAP Contracts, a housing area must have no evidence of infestation, and HUD will monitor O/As to ensure this is a reality.

One attendee from Florida, Erin McKean, an assisted housing staff added, We learned a lot about bed bugs. The session was really enlightening and put down many of my worries to rest knowing that I have now all the information to comply with the regulations. We currently have the heat machine we purchased, but we learned that the steam works well too!

What does HUD Say About Bed Bugs? provided much needed guidance to owners, management agents (O/As) and residents of HUD multifamily insured and assisted properties to remind all parties of the importance of prevention, identification, and treatment of infestations in HUD-assisted and HUD-insured rental housing. It covered topics such as Integrated Pest Management Plan (IPM); staff training; responding to inspection findings; Bed Bug prevention and removal; Bed Bug control in multifamily housing; effective methods for control and more.

For general awareness and information, the session is still available on-demand, and in DVDs and transcripts. For more information, visit http://www.audiosolutionz.com/public-housing-compliance/huds-take-on-bed-bugs.html
