Everyone knows youre not supposed to let the bed bugs bite, but new research offers a great reason why.

According to a new study published inThe American Journal of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene, bed bugs could be able to transmit Chagas disease, a terrifying infection that kills about 50,000 people a year and was previously thought to be exclusively carried by the kissing bug. At first, there are few outward signs of infection, but then about 20 years later, some 20% of the afflicted will develop serious problems, including an arrhythmia or even sudden death from cardiac arrest.

There are a lot of people with Chagas disease, and a lot of bed bugs. They are in our houses, in our beds and in high numbers, said Michael Levy, the new papers senior author and an assistant professor at University of Pennsylvanias Perelman School of Medicine. Weve shown that the bed bug can acquire and transmit the parasite. Our next step is to determine whether they are, or will become, an important player in the epidemiology of Chagas disease.

On the one hand, this is to say the least concerning. Chagas disease is serious and can, in fact, lead to cardiac or intestinal complications. Though its commonly found in places like South America, Central America, and even Mexico, its being diagnosed more and more in the United States.

On the other hand, you can find more than 45 different potential human disease agents in the average bed bug, including Hepatitis B, worms, and other bacteria and viruses. However, none of them have been proven to be transmitted to humans via bed bugs. Not even Chagas disease.

So why then are so many people getting concerned?

Over the past few years, bed bugs have been making quite the comeback. According to a press release from pest control service Orkin, increases in bed bug populations have been evidenced by the more than 20% increase in Rollins, Orkins parent company, bed bug business compared to 2012.

We have been told that Bed Bugs do not spread disease with the bite, but this report tells us that may not be the case. Fortunately Chagas Disease is not all that common in the US but the CDC states, In the United States, Chagas disease is considered one of the neglected parasitic infections (NPI), a group of five parasitic diseases that have been targeted by CDC for public health action. Prompt treatment of bed bug infestations remains the best way to control their spread, and heat treatment the most effective method, explains Richard Halback of Thermination Technology.

Higher populations of bed bugs that could potentially carry Chagas disease means the U.S. could be facing an increased threat of the infection. Though its certainly cause to be concerned, its far from a legitimate reason to panic.

Bed bugs do not cause Chagas disease, they can only carry it, said Levy. If you have bed bugs in your house you are not at risk of infection unless the disease is already present There is much we dont know about the behavior and ecology of both the Chagas parasite and bed bugsperhaps there is some detail about the two that we are yet to uncover that will prove them incompatible, and that the threat is empty.

During summer 2009, a survey was sent to all hospital professors in the Collge des Enseignants de Dermatologie de France asking for information on the number of bed bug cases in 2009, treatment difficulties, use of pest control professionals, and personal opinion regarding the incidence of bed bugs compared to past years. The conclusion was that France is experiencing the same resurgence of bed bugs as other parts of the world, and the use of entomological experts and pest control professionals is necessary. A national program has been launched in France to further assess bed bug incidence and to study bed bug-related diseases.

(ARA) - When you're on vacation, you may pick up items that remind you of your trip, like a T-shirt or postcards. However, be mindful that you don't bring home unwanted souvenirs -- bed bugs.

Bed bugs were once thought to be all but wiped out in the U.S., but reports of these pests resurfaced in recent years, partly due to increased international travel. Since bed bugs are great hitchhikers -- latching onto luggage, personal belongings or even you -- they can be found almost anywhere, from one- to five-star hotels, resorts and cruise ships to retail stores and even movie theaters.

Adult bed bugs are similar in size and color to apple seeds. Though these nocturnal pests are not known to transmit disease, they feed on human blood for survival. An encounter with them is anything but pleasant as red marks or swelling may develop around the bite area.

What can be worse than receiving a bed bug bite is unknowingly bringing them home.

"Once they've established themselves in your home, bed bugs can be very difficult to remove without the help of a professional," says Orkin Technical Director Ron Harrison.

Harrison offers the following bed bug tips for travelers, using the acronym SLEEP to help you remember:

S.L.E.E.P. * Survey your room for signs of an infestation, such as small rust-colored spots, cream-colored eggs or cast-off skins on bed sheets, mattress tags, seams and bed skirts. While you might think only one-star hotels are likely to host bed bugs, these pests aren't picky about where they stay -- travelers are their main attraction.

* Lift and look. During the day, bed bugs hide in dark cracks and are most likely found within a five-foot radius of the bed. Typical hiding spots include crevices associated with mattresses, box springs, bed frames, headboards, furniture, behind baseboards, picture frames and even torn wallpaper. Make sure to inspect all these areas in your hotel room for bed bugs, and call the front desk to report any signs of an infestation.

* Elevate your luggage away from walls and furniture. Hotel luggage racks are more than just a convenient place to store your belongings -- they can also make it difficult for pests to climb into your suitcase. Be sure to inspect the rack first for signs of bed bugs.

* Examine your luggage carefully before leaving your destination and when you return home to ensure you do not transport any unwanted guests. Once home, always keep luggage off the bed, and store it in a closet or an area far away from your bedroom.
