Avoid hitchhiking bed bugs during summer travels

EDMOND Do you like to travel? It turns out, bed bugs do, too. With summer just around the corner, family vacation season will soon be in full swing, and that means being prepared to avoid picking up any unwelcome passengers.

Bed bugs cant fly or jump, but they are fantastic hitchhikers, said Gina Peek, Oklahoma State University Cooperative Extension housing and consumer specialist. Taking a few simple precautions as you travel can cut your risk of exposure to this annoying pest.

Adult bed bugs are about the size and shape of an apple seed. Mainly active at night, they need a blood meal to survive and feed almost exclusively on humans. Reactions to being bitten vary from person to person. Some people have no reaction, while others may experience itchy, red welts or localized swelling within a day or two.

One way to cut your exposure to bed bugs while traveling is to check your motel or hotel room for signs of the pests before settling in, said Debbie Bell, Oklahoma County CNEP Area Coordinator. Start by storing your suitcases in the clean, dry bathtub or leaving your luggage just outside the room.

Heavily infested rooms could smell sweet or musty like rotten raspberries and/or moldy shoes. The odor most likely will be strongest under the headboard and mattress.

Take a deep breath. If something smells off, dont hesitate to ask for another room, Bell stated.

Bed bugs are commonly found in beds and sleeping areas. Most bed bugs hide within 15 feet of the bed and are most likely to be found at the top of the bed.

Carefully pull back the blankets, sheets and mattress pad at the top of the bed to search for eggs, bugs, blood and black fecal spots, which are signs of a bed bug infestation. Pay close attention to the box springs; headboards; and seams, tufts and crevices of mattresses.

Bed bugs also can make themselves at home in upholstered chairs and sofas, especially if the furniture is used for sleeping, as well as in the cracks, crevices and recesses of nightstands and dressers.

Check the luggage rack for signs of the pests by looking on and under the straps.

Responsibility for treating bed bugs | The Forum for …

I'm a new landlord and new to MA. I rent the four rooms out to the tenants in my apartment in the beginning of 2011. In July, one of my tenant notified me on the existing of bed bugs. I spoke to a exterminator and understand that the bed bugs were brought into the house from others as there were no bed bugs in the house from the start. I agreed to have a exterminator come in to have these treated as this is part of the law that landlord has to deal with it even though landlord has nothing to do with the bed bugs (the house has no bed bugs from the beginning). Anyway, is there any law to protect the landlord on this kind of issue? If on the Lease Agreement, landlord and tenant agreed the to no matter what kind of bugs in the house, landlord has no responsibility on paying for the treatment. Can this take effected if it's written on the Lease Agreement? For example, as the issue above, if the landlord and tenant agreed on landlord will not pay for the treatment on bed bugs on the Lease Agreement, then will this work when it comes to the MA law that landlord has to treat the bed bugs? If not, then what's the Lease Agreement for/mean if what's written on it does not take effected? I appreciate your time on writing your response/advise. Thank you!

Bed bugs infest Honolulu homeless shelter

Bed bugs.

Just the thought of them make you itch.

But those staying at a Honolulu homeless shelter say it's not just their minds playing tricks on them. They got bite marks to prove it.

"Oh yeah I got bite all over my legs. Lotta cuts over here, cuts over there. It's really infested in there, said Michael Laimana pointing at his legs.

Laimana is one of 150 people who stay at the shelter each night. He says his bed isn't the only one with a pest problem.

A mother shared photos of her 3-year-old covered with red marks that she says are bed bug bites.

Connie Mitchell, the Executive Director at the Institute for Human Services, admits there is a problem. But she says it's almost impossible to prevent with the amount of traffic in and out of the emergency shelter.

"We definitely take it seriously. We have regular fumigation going on and we also have protocols that we follow on a daily basis as well as when we actually find that there's some kind of infestation with a particular bunk," said Mitchell.

There was a recent infestation at Oahu Community Correctional Center and some of Hawaii's finest hotels have had reports of them. So Mitchell says a problem at a homeless shelter is almost inevitable.

"Sometimes, with the folks that do come in, they're bringing them in their belongings a lot of the time if they're coming from the street. So it's very challenging to keep it in control, Mitchell said.
