Vermont couple settles state bed bug lawsuit for $450k

RUTLAND (AP) - A Rutland couple whose home was made uninhabitable after it was sprayed for bed bugs with a banned pesticide has reached a $450,000 settlement with the Vermont agency that hired the exterminator.

Neil and Patricia Whitney agreed last week to end their federal lawsuit against the state Department for Children and Families, the state Agency of Human Services and a number others.

The Whitneys' attorney, Karl Anderson tells the Rutland Herald the settlement will allow his clients "to start their life over with a little cushion."

The Whitneys maintain their home became unlivable after it was sprayed with a banned pesticide to kill bed bugs that was brought into their home by a ward of the state.

Assistant Attorney General Eve Jacobs-Carnahan says the state is admitting no wrongdoing.

Bedbugs attack at Manayunk movie theater, lawsuit claims

An East Germantown woman's cinema outing morphed into a real-life creature feature when she was aggressively attacked by bedbugs at a local movie theater, according to a lawsuit filed Monday in the civil division of the Philadelphia Court of Common Pleas.

Sabrina Hammond attended the United Artists Main Street Theatre 6 in Manayunk on Sept. 28, 2013, according to the complaint. While there, she became fodder for a hoard of bloodthirsty bedbugs, the lawsuit claims.

Hammond allegedly suffered serious parasite-related injuries to the head, body and extremities, including, but not limited to bites on her legs and buttocks, and a severe shock to the nerves and nervous system, according to the suit.

The complaint claims the damage has interfered with Hammonds daily routine and may be permanent. Hammond will have to continue to spend money on medical treatment in the future, the suit alleges.

Both Hammond and her attorney declined to comment, citing the pending litigation.

Reports of bedbugs have been on the rise in Philadelphia for the past several years. A 2013 Terminix survey ranked Philly as the nations second most bedbug-infested city.

A Penn Medicine study published earlier this year in the Journal of Medical Entomology found that, from 2008 to 2011, reports of bedbugs in the city rose 4.5 percent each month, an increase of nearly 70 percent year to year. The study recorded 382 reports of bedbug infestations in Philadelphia during those three years.

That number exploded between September 2011 and June 2012, when city residents made 236 reports of bedbug infestations, according to study results. The number of infestations peaked annually in August and reached a yearly low each February, the study found.

Health department offers class on preventing bed bugs

KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) -

The health department has seen a jump in the number of calls coming in concerning nasty bed bugs so, for the first time, they are offering a special class to help homeowners battle the bugs.

"All they eat is human blood," said Michael Swoyer with the Kansas City, MO, Health Department. "That's all they eat, that's all they want."

Swoyer is on a mission to help families squash the problem for good.

"No matter how clean you are, no matter how wealthy you are, anybody can get bed bugs because they just hitch hike in on what people are wearing or what people are carrying," Swoyer said.

He says it's alarming just how quickly one bed bug can multiply.

"She goes off and hides, and so that's why the one that crawls into your backpack or purse could very well be a pregnant female and she's got 500 fertilized eggs inside of her," Swoyer said.

He believes education is the best tool to combat the growing problem, so he came up with an idea to offer families a free class about prevention and information about what to do to get your house ready for a professional if you spot critters.

"There's a lot of prep work involved with any type of pest management. Clutter is an issue, sanitation is an issue. If all that is cleared up beforehand, then companies can do their job that much quicker and get out of there that much quicker," Swoyer said.

After completing the two-hour class, the homeowner will get a coupon for a discount they can use with several pest control companies. It's being done in an effort to stop the blood-sucking vampires that are lurking in your sheets.

Help On The Way For Elderly Woman After Apartment Is Bed Bug Infested

OKLAHOMA CITY -

An 80-year-old Oklahoma City woman with a bad bed bug problem in her apartment has gotten relief from complete strangers.

Nancy Nussle has lived at Isola Bella Apartments for five years. Last year, her complex sprayed her apartment for free for bed bugs. She says that problem caused her to get rid of all of her furniture except for a modest cot that she's been sleeping on.

The bed bugs returned recently. Bites on Nancy's arms and legs were visible when News 9 met with her Thursday.

Nussle was heartbroken because she says her landlord wanted her to pay the $400 it would cost to spray for bed bugs the second time. Nussle lives on social security, and said there was no way she could pay it. Her landlord told us she could pay off the balance in installments.

After our initial story aired Thursday night, we got several calls from area exterminator companies, and from people in the community, who wanted to help the 80-year-old woman.

"You keep thinking you can't get any lower, and then something great happens," said Nussle. "I'm looking forward to life now."

On Friday, the spraying got done for Nussle and free of charge. Also, Nancy received some monetary support, as well as a new bed and a new couch from strangers.
