Experts Predict Increase in Bed Bug Cases for 2014
CHICAGO, Dec. 2, 2013 /PRNewswire/ --There's one thing on which top entomologists agree: The current bed bug infestation has not yet reached its peak in the U.S.
According to experts, the current surge in U.S. bed bug infestations began around 2004, but didn't hit the national news until 2010, when multi-unit dwellings began to experience issues with the pesky bugs. Data from the 2013 Bugs without Borders Survey by the National Pest Management Association (NPMA) confirmed that 98 percent of pest management professionals encountered a bed bug infestation during the past 12 months in an apartment or condominium, up from 90 percent in 2011.
"Bed bugs have been a hot topic in the news during the past several years; especially when a new geographical area is infested or bed bugs are discovered in public places such as hotels or shopping centers," said Dini Miller, Ph. D., Department of Entomology at Virginia Tech. "Unfortunately, people have become desensitized to the issue, leading them to believe the risk has decreased, but the issue is actually greater than before."
Pest control companies and businesses that sell products to prevent or control bed bugs echo the observation that the war against bed bugs is probably not going away any time soon.
"Since 2010, sales of mattress and box spring encasements have continued to increase each year," said James Bell, CEO of Protect-A-Bed. "Every major pest control company in the United States buys our products, which they sell to individuals fighting a bed bug infestation. The demand for product has certainly not slowed down."
Bugs without Boarders survey respondents reported an increase in bed bug infestations at a variety of public places, including schools, day care centers, hospitals, libraries and on public transportation. Based on these reports, top entomologists also agree on several other emerging trends.
People with bed bug issues tend to experience unnecessary anxiety

Inspections Find no Bed Bugs in a Rumored Lexington Play Place, My Cleaning Products Suggests a Bed Bug Spray to Keep …
Lexington, SC (PRWEB) February 24, 2014
A play center was recently rumored to be infested of bed bugs. However, a report from wistv.com related that no sign of the critters was found in the place. Still, My Cleaning Products said that it is at risk of their presence. And so to help it and the rest of the public keep the pesky insects at bay, it recommended a pesticide-exempt bed bug spray.
The report, published on February 19, 2013, shared that the play center was located at Lexington, South Carolina. And as it relayed, the rumors of it being infested started when a mother complained that her daughter picked-up the crawlies from the place.
It was said in the report that the mother posted her claim online and even told the local news outlets about it. That and the quick spread of it, it related, prompted the management to have the place inspected. And as detailed, the two inspections it underwent showed that it got none of those crawlies.
Here is an excerpt from the post No Bed Bugs Found in Lexington Play Place by My Cleaning Products.
Monkey Joe, a play place in Lexington, South Carolina, was recently rumored to have bed bugs. However, with the inspections it went through, it had proven that it doesn't have them.
The rumor started when a mother claimed that her 10-month-old daughter picked up the critters from the play center during their visit on February 04, 2014. She posted pictures of the supposed bed bugs on Facebook and shared her story with local media outlets. When she was contacted by the company's employees following it, she also said her daughter was still recuperating from the bed bug bites.
According to My Cleaning Products, bed bugs are so prevalent these days that there seem to be no place safe from their presence. And as it commented, though they were not found in the reported play place, still there is a possibility that they would infest just like any other place.
And so, to help it and anyone else avoid the infestation of those critters, MCP advised the use of a pesticide-exempt bed bug spray. Besides being wary of any bed bug sign, it said that getting it would enable one to kill bed bugs prompt and safe.
That bed bug spray was actually Bed Bug Bully. The company stated that it is unlike the majority of the pesticides as it is made with organic ingredients. It shared that it is even on EPA's FIFRA 25(b) for being pesticide-exempt.

Does Bed Bug Repellent Work To Prevent Bed Bug Bites?
Don't let the bed bug bites! Learn the truth about the effectiveness of bed bug repellent, what you need to do to prevent the bites and how to get rid of those blood sucking pests.
Bed bugs the idea of having these fast growing urban pest in your bed and house is enough to send anyone running for an insect repellent immediately. After all, realizing there are thousands of these little brown bugs crawling in the mattress that can bite and suck your blood in the dead of night not only can ruin your sleep but is also enough to affect you psychologically and harm one's quality of life.
As such, if you have been bitten by bed bugs, you may feel the need to invest in some sort of bed bug repellent (spray, lotion or cream) for the skin to repel and prevent further bites.
However, do these repellant insecticides really work to prevent bed bugs and their bites? Here are some facts...
According to Dr. Dini M. Miller, Ph.D., an associate professor in Urban Pest Management at Virginia Tech's Department of Entomology, they tested several repellant insecticides on bed bugs and found that none of the repellent insecticides have had any effect against bed bugs.
He says on MSNBC:
...we have found bed bugs to be very determined little creatures and I think it would be hard to stop a hungry bed bug. In addition, the repellants that you buy for mosquitoes last only a couple of hours before the effects begin to wear off. If you apply a repellant before getting into bed, a lot of the material could rub off on the sheets etc. Also, bed bugs are most active between 3 and 5 am, which is several hours after the time you would have put the on the repellant to go to bed. Bottom line, a repellant may prevent you from getting a bite or two but I do not believe that they will significantly hinder a hungry bed bug.
These results have also been further confirmed by the University of Kentucky. According to them:
Conventional insecticides used as skin repellents such as OFF (DEET) to deter ticks and mosquitoes, do not appear to be effective against bed bugs. Attempting to avoid being bitten by applying insect repellent at bedtime is not recommended. Sleeping with the lights on is not likely to deter hungry bed bugs either.
