Bed Bugs Re-Infested University of Washington Dormitory

Its not that they are welcome, but bed bugs have returned to a University of Washingtons dormitory.

The tiny critters particularly re-infested the campus Haggett Hall. And including their recent comeback, it was already the third time that they showed up in the dorm.

It was back in October 2013 when the vampire-like critters first appeared in the said residence hall. The bed bug bites in one of the students living in the housing were what led to the discovery of their presence. Specifically, it led to a complete inspection on the 11th of the same month, followed by a treatment when the pests were confirmed.

However, in December 2013, the pesky creatures were again sighted in the dormitory. The same thing happened just this January. And despite the bed bug elimination implemented on the 16th of January, still a number of the crawlies were found between the 16th to 27th day of the month.

That night, I came back to my room and I saw this brown-black thing, Alice said. So I put a paper towel over it and I put it in a Ziploc baggie and at that point it was pissed and running around really fast [in the bag] and I thought Oh my God, what is this?

They contacted Haggett Hall Resident Director Jessica Hennessy to have the bug identified. Haggett Hall custodial supervisor Randall Riebe then confirmed that the creature was indeed a bed bug. Hennessy declined to provide comments on the matter.

Bed Bug Plague – Bed Bug Plague Hits Utah

Bed bugs may not sound as frightening as a global flu pandemic, but the hungry bloodsuckers have already attacked hundreds of thousands of unsuspecting Americans while they slept.

Nowtheyre crawling into the crevices of Utah homes and feasting on the residents of the Beehive state. Salt Lake County has seen its bed bug complaints nearly double between 2007 and 2008, from hotels to homes.

The only good thing you can say about bed bugs is they do not transmit disease, said Diane Keay, a Salt Lake Valley Health Department supervisor. The real problem seems to be horror.

Humans are a bed bugs main course. The nocturnal creatures often strike while the person is sleeping, leaving their victim with uncomfortable, itchy welts. Rich and poor are vulnerable: homeless shelters and home owners have the same enemy.

In the 1930s, 1940s and 1950s, bed bugs were commonly found in U.S. hotels, hospitals, theaters and trains, according to Michael Potter, a professor of entomology at the University of Kentucky. But an alert public and aggressive chemical campaign proved highly successful. Insecticides and pesticides such as DDT, some of which were easily available at the drug store, decimated bed bug numbers.

Anyone who had a bedbug problem could now have the tools to absolutely go to war, he said.

In the late 1990s, for reasons that are not entirely clear, bed bug populations exploded in major urban areas across the world. Though questioned by some, a common explanation is the increase of international travel. Many bed bugs also seem to have developed a resistance to insecticides, making extermination costly and difficult. U.S. Environmental Protection Agency rules have restricted the use of some effective pesticides, Potter said.

The crisis sparked an April bed bug summit in Virginia, which drew the National Pest Management Association, the New Jersey Apartment Association, the New Mexico Department of Agriculture and many others.

Bed Bug Control NJ – Expert Exterminators, Bed bugs in New …

Bed bugs thrive in temperate climates, and can be found in New Jersey. They tend to hide in beds and other furniture. There are many different species of bed bug and they are each considered parasites. The source of food for all bed bugs is blood, but there is one species, Cimex lectularius, that consumes human blood. They look like beetles, with flattened bodies and a reddish-brown exoskeleton. Adults are around inch long, and they have no wings.

They are not capable of jumping like lice, but they can crawl and drop down from ceiling vents. Bed bugs in New Jersey can be transmitted from home to home through catching a ride on pets, through the clothes and backpacks of human visitors. They can be found in items such as furniture that have bed bugs nesting already. They can also travel through air ducts and other pipes. They like to settle in dark spaces and hide their eggs there as well.

There are ways to control your bed bug infestation in New Jersey. They usually remain near their chosen host and you can look for evidence of their presence in bedding, furniture and linens. You can tell a bed bug apart from other common types of roaches and beetles, because when you kill it, it releases an unpleasant, sweet smell like rotting raspberries. If they have been feeding, you will also find blood.

Sometimes an infestation can be discovered due to small patches of blood on sheets and furniture. If you keep your house neat and organized, it will be easier to detect bed bugs if you have them. Washing linens on the hottest setting can help kill bed bugs and their eggs. Also, double-check all used furniture that you buy is another method to control and prevent bed bug infestation in New Jersey.

When the bed bug exterminators come to treat your infested house, here is what to expect. They will be spraying problem areas with a pesticide. The pesticide is clear and kills bed bugs on contact. Because of this, it is very important that infested areas are thoroughly cleaned before treatment. You will need to leave while the bed bug exterminators do their job for at least two hours.

It will take anywhere from one to six hours for sprayed areas to dry depending on environmental conditions. Do not sleep without a sheet on your treated mattress. The extermination process will take around a month. It is crucial to continue sanitizing your exposed linens regularly over this time period.

You can prepare for the process by cleaning and sanitizing everything in the exposed area and cutting down on the amount of loose items lying around. The most important hot zones are beds and couches. It is helpful to Steam-Clean or Wet-Vac your carpets. You can clean and sanitize linoleum or tile floors. In addressing your bed, you can vacuum your mattress and box spring with a long hose.

Make sure you immediately take vacuum bags out of your house after sweeping infested areas instead of waiting until they are full. Floors and carpets around all infested furniture should be vacuumed and cleaned. All exposed linens and clothing should be washed and dried on the hot setting or dry-cleaned. This should occur both before and after treatment.
