Bed bugs thrive in temperate climates, and can be found in New Jersey. They tend to hide in beds and other furniture. The source of food for all bed bugs is blood, but there is one species, Cimex lectularius, that consumes human blood. They look like beetles, with flattened bodies and a reddish-brown exoskeleton. You can tell a bed bug apart from other common types of roaches and beetles, because when you kill it, it releases an unpleasant, sweet smell like rotting raspberries.
