'Inspect it for bed bugs,' and other tips for saving money

What lengths would you go to cut costs? Would you reuse your tea bags or not flush your toilet?

Those suggestions and more were offered up when The Globe and Mail asked readers to share the weirdest things they do to save money. Its expensive to be part of the rat race, but Globe readers have come up with creative ways to save money at work.

I collect Stouffers entree boxes from my work's recycle bin to collect reward points that other people discarded. I have collected a few $10 grocery gift cards just from being a garbage digger. Ah, don't tell my boss that I patrol the kitchen's recycle bin during office hours, writes a Richmond Hill, Ont., reader, whose identity we are protecting from her boss.

Sandy, a reader in Coquitlam, B.C., says she rides her bike to work to save on car expenses and to keep fit without paying for a gym membership. Not so strange, right?

But I also shower at work, she adds. Therefore, I'm using the company's hot water, soap, shampoo, conditioner, body lotion and electricity for my hair dryer instead of my own.

Its great when you can save on personal hygiene, but can it be taken too far? One reader said she uses mayonnaise as a hair conditioner and face cream.

Another, Kurstyn in Dartmout, N.S., uses olive oil: I use it as a body moisturizer, a bath oil, an eye-makeup remover, a face mask, a hair mask and a face moisturizer. I even mix it with a little bit of castor oil and use it as a cleanser. The possibilities are endless!

Kurstyn adds that baking soda makes a fine exfoliant, teeth whitener, dry shampoo and face mask.

Out of perfume? Connie in Toronto has a suggestion: I used kitchen vanilla as a perfume once when I had run out. Its living like the old folks back home did cause they remembered the Depression and eating squirrels and armadillos.

Okay then! Food does add up, and Globe readers have some suggestions for saving there as well.

Complimentary Sample of Pesticide-Free Best Bed Bug Spray Offered as Bed Bugs Crawl In to Michigan Libraries

Bed bugs were creeping in to Michigan libraries. And to help every individual suffering from the said pests' presence be it in houses, offices and residences, My Cleaning Products suggested the use of Bed Bug Bully, the bed bug spray also used by pest-control companies.

New York, NY (PRWEB) February 26, 2013

As shared in the report, Kalamazoo Public Library was the one reached by bed bugs last week. It was said that it was already its second bed bug incident this month. The Children's Room in its Central Library was particularly the area where the pests were found, related the report. But more specifically, it detailed, the crawlies were detected in the bindings of the books returned from the library's Washington Branch.

In addition to the Kalamazoo Public Library, the report added there was another one in the region that experienced similar bed bug problem. And because of both incidents, My Cleaning Products shared that other libraries were warned of the issue and advised of the things to do.

The increase in domestic and international travel was pointed the major reason of the bed bug increase, MCP shared.

Below is a part of the report.

A week ago, bed bugs were detected in Kalamazoo Public Library. And as reported, it was already the second time for the vampire-like pests to be sighted in it. But the pests are not done yet as it was said that they were likely to reach more Michigan libraries.

Particularly, it was said that bed bugs were found in the Children's Room of the Kalamazoo's Central Library. They were spotted in the bindings of the books returned to the library's Washington Square branch. And as a result, the said affected room was, in six days, closed.

According to My Cleaning Products, it is truly possible for bed bugs to hide and hitch a ride on books. However, it said that they are more common in houses than in any other place.

Wherever the infestation is though houses, libraries or offices - the company said that early bed bug inspection and treatment are imperative. Nonetheless, for a safe and effective bed bug treatment, it only recommended Bed Bug Bully.

New Non-Pesticide Bed Bug Spray and Bed Bug Bills Laid Out in Connecticut Seek to Help the Public Fight Off the Pests …

Two new bills to help control bed bug spread were proposed in Connecticut. Wanting to help the public get rid of the pests as well, My Cleaning Products advised the use of the non-pesticide bed bug spray called Bed Bug Bully.

Hartford, CT (PRWEB) February 26, 2013

According to the said report, one of the bills was proposed by Bridgeport Senator Andres Ayala and sets the duties of the landlord as well as that of the tenants. Meanwhile, the other bill, it related, was designed by Waterbury Representative Larry Butler and specifies the procedures of bed bug extermination in housing units public or not.

Below is a part of the said report.

Connecticut lawmakers are considering legislation that spells out the responsibilities of landlords and tenants when it comes to bed bug infestations.

The General Assembly's Housing Committee is scheduled to hear testimony Tuesday on several bills addressing bed bugs.

Acknowledging that the two bills could indeed help control the bed bug spread, My Cleaning Products also expressed its intention to help the public. It introduced to them an organic bed bug spray that offers an effective and safe bed bug treatment.

Specifically, that bed bug spray is Bed Bug Bully. As proven by pest-control companies, it delivers a truly effective bed bug treatment cutting their labor cost by $1,000, said the company.

In addition, it related that it is approved by FIFRA 25(b). And as a pesticide-exempt solution, MCP stated that it provides a safe bed bug treatment protecting its users and anyone else exposed to it from chemical health risks.

As a bonus, My Cleaning Products shared that Bed Bug Bully is also inexpensive. Any bed bug victim, it said, could kill bed bugs without spending too big with its help. And anyone could actually prove that himself, it asserted, as complimentary samples of the said bed bug spray are now available. So, to test the product and see for themselves how well it works, the company urged the public to grab a sample of it.

Burnaby housing complex infested with bed bugs

METRO VANCOUVER -- Residents of a housing complex in Burnaby are fed up with a chronic infestation of bed bugs that has persisted despite numerous attempts to eradicate the bloodsuckers.

Stratford Gardens, a multi-building housing complex on Pandora Street, has been infested with the bugs for years.

"It's on ongoing thing," said resident Marilyn McLeod. "I'm tired of this."

Nirmal Bains, another resident, said she had no bed to sleep on because of the bugs.

"I just hope someone can do something about them," she said. "It's gone on so long."

Rick Rizzuto has lived at Stratford Gardens for approximately eight years, and he estimated that the infestation has lasted the past couple of years.

"I've been bitten. They like me," he said. "I would get a new bed and a new couch, . but you can't up and spend $2,000 every time there's an infestation."

Rizzuto has seen the bugs crawling on his arms and legs. He has avoided his family, for fear of spreading the infestation.

"Last time I saw my parents was four years (ago). I can't see anyone because of this," he said.

B.C. Housing has brought in pest control crews, but the bugs are still an ongoing problem.

Hugh Adami: Bedbugs have driven Ottawa Community Housing tenant to despair

Like many whose homes have been invaded by the revolting bed bug, Michelle Ruthven is an emotional mess.

Honestly, it has changed my life, says the distraught woman, who lives in a block of eight townhouses, owned by Ottawa Community Housing, in Mechanicsville.

Ruthvens situation is baffling because she has had to put up with the pests since September, despite repeated sprayings. The exterminator has been to her home six times most recently on Wednesday. Thursday morning, her son, whos been sleeping on an air mattress, woke up to find more bites on his body. Her daughter, who was visiting, was bitten, too. Ruthven figures the bed bugs first came in from an adjoining unit six months ago.

OCH chief executive Jo-Anne Poirier promises the housing authority will do what it has to do to destroy the pests. It is notifying all other tenants in the building to see whether they have the problem, too. She says there are various reasons why treatments might not work at once, even if they are applied repeatedly. For one, products used to spray for pests have to be environmentally friendly, so they might not be as strong as they used to be. As well, says Poirier, tenants often enough fail to take all necessary steps to prepare for a spraying. For example, tenants are asked to wash and dry all clothing, linens and towels to kill any possible bugs or eggs. They are then to store the garments and such in sealable plastic bags until it is determined whether spraying has done its job. Ruthven maintains she did all that work, numerous times.

Ruthven has been told bed bugs do not discriminate, are not a cleanliness issue and can invade any household, whether they are mansions or multiple-dwelling buildings. The bugs have turned up in offices, hospitals, and, last month, at the Vancouver provincial courthouse.

Still, she is ashamed of what she is going through and is exhausted by the worry and work the bed bugs have created. She even considered moving, but soon realized she cant afford to give up her subsidized unit. She inquired about a transfer to another OCH building, but was told she would need a number of documents, including a doctors letter indicating she was under duress as a result of the insects.

She feels like a leper and is isolating herself from her friends. Her close friend and neighbour, Sandra Hamilton, says Ruthven doesnt want them visiting her in case they end up transporting the tiny, flat pests back to their homes. Hamilton, whose unit was sprayed as a precaution and has remained bug-free, says Ruthven also doesnt want to drop in on people in case she brings the bugs to them. Shes afraid to come up and visit me.

Hamilton says she believes five of the eight units have received at least one treatment.

But, says Ruthven: Im the one who has been continually sprayed, and they still show up, somehow. I dont know if any of my neighbours still have them, and I havent said anything to anybody.
