Reports of bedbugs double in Vancouver

A pest control agency is reporting a two-fold increase in Vancouver bedbug infestation in the past three years, following a trend happening right across Canada.

In 2010, we were getting about 20 to 25 calls a week (in Vancouver), said Abell Pest Control regional manager Bola Fagbamiye, Now were at the point where were getting over 50 calls a week.

According to a survey commissioned by the Toronto-based pest control company in late June involving 67 public health inspectors, 57% said reports of bedbug infestations have risen over the past three years.

The study found 81% of the inspectors agreed apartment buildings had experienced the largest jump in bedbug populations.

Glen Embree, manager of health protection programs for Fraser Health in Surrey, confirmed the increase in bedbug calls.

If youre looking at last year compared to 10 years ago, yeah, there has been a lot more calls about bedbugs, he said Thursday.

With several self-help options available, Embree said putting clothes or sensitive silks into the freezer is one option to kill the bugs. Another is using hot water 57 degrees Celsius is recommended to scrub linens. Carpet steaming and frequent vacuuming can also work.

Sprays containing the insecticide pyrethrum are also available at gardening stores or hardware businesses. They are considered a gentler chemical treatment process than industry products.

A natural option is diatomaceous earth, also available at gardening stores, which literally sucks the blood out of the bug.

Its the crushed up exoskeletons of little aquatic organisms called diatoms, hence the term diatomaceous earth, said Brett Johnston, president of pest control firm Assured Thermal Solutions.

I-Team: Bedbug Treatments Leave Homes in Flames

People who get bedbugs often say they would try anything to get rid of the bloodsucking pests, and now there's debate over a type of heat treatment after several fires across the U.S. and Canada are being blamed on bedbug exterminations gone wrong.

In the summer of 2011, a 50-unit condominium in Edmonton, Canada burned when exterminators used a pest control treatment known as radiant heat, according to investigators there. It promises to eradicate bedbugs using industrial space heaters and fans to bring every square inch of an infested room above 120 degrees. Exterminators say more than an hour and a half of exposure to such high temperaturesensures a 100 percent bedbug kill rate.

The problem is, warming confined spaces with powerful heaters carries serious fire hazards, according to some experts.

The worst that can happen is you can burn your house down, and youre risking your life, said Glenn Waldorf, of Bell Environmental Services in Fairfield, N.J.

After the Edmonton condominium building burned, Canadian fire investigators issued a $10,000 fine to Calgary-based pest control company Bed Bug Task Force. The exterminators were found to have used propane heaters against fire code. The owners of the apartment building are now suing Bed Bug Task Force for $3.5 million in damages.

Bed Bug Task Force did not return the I-Teams email seeking comment.

Radiant heat treatments have led to other disastrous fires closer to New York City. Last month in Woodbury, N.J., fire officials said a man accidentally set his house on fire while attempting to kill bedbugs with a do-it-yourself radiant heat treatment. In October of 2012, fire investigators in New Hampshire said a three-family home burned down during a heat treatment. Last Valentines Day, firefighters in Dayton, Ohio, responded to a second-floor fire and found a pest control company was using heaters and fans to kill bedbugs.

Consumers are panicked. You have bugs in your home. Youve got these little vampires in your bed biting you, and they imagine companies have solutions and dont think through what the issues are with any of the various solutions out there, said Waldorf.

Waldorf said using cryogenic freeze technology is much safer than using heat to kill bedbugs. But while some pest control outfits warn against thermal treatments, others stand by radiant heat as the gold standard in bedbug extermination.

Robert Suriano, president of Bliss Pest Protection Services in New York City, recently invested tens of thousands of dollars in heaters and fans intended for bedbug eradication. He said the recent fires prove only that homeowners should trust trained professionals and avoid low-cost, do-it-yourself heat treatments.

Bedbugs beware: Startups bet on mother nature

Before the 2010 Vancouver Olympics even began, Karn Manhas found himself in a heated discussion about a possible outcome for Canada that had nothing to do with the podium: a bedbug boom.

It wasnt inconceivable. By the end of the 2000 Sydney Games in Australia, about 98 per cent of the hotels in Sydney had at least one room infected with the blood-sucking insects. Australian scientist Stephen Doggett noted a 5,000-per-cent increase in the treatment of bedbugs between 2000 and 2005 in Sydneys state of New South Wales.

Europe and North America are dealing with a resurgence of the pests, and Toronto and Vancouver are on a top-10 list of most-infested cities in North America compiled by Insight Pharmaceuticals. These unsettling facts left Mr. Manhas and a colleague arguing about solutions.

Pesticide use is on the wane, driven by concern about toxic substances and potential insect resistance. And the pesticides that remain arent necessarily working. They dont kill bedbug eggs, so once they hatch, exterminators need to return. And now, bedbug populations are showing a strong immunity to the class of pesticides most commonly in use.

Mr. Manhas, a former member of the B.C. legislature with a degree in biology and a minor in biotechnology, decided he had something to prove: Natural alternatives could stamp out bedbugs. He hadnt planned on developing a research project or founding a company. He just wanted to win the argument, he says.

Among the companies working on the bedbug problem is Rest Assured MC Inc., based in Ottawa. Heat is their weapon, says Lawrence Chadnick, president of the firm, which is a manufacturer and supplier of bedbug products.

Treating a whole house with heat will kill everything, he says. Mr. Chadnick has developed a heat chamber that is portable and electric.

Eco Bug Doctor, based in Montreal, has devised a self-sterilizing bed that uses both heat and bedbug traps to allow people to have a worry-free night. The only way that a bedbug can travel up onto the Good Knight bed is through a system of traps. If the traps dont stop them, then the owner can heat the bed with a cover stored beneath it. It shuts off automatically when finished.

For 16 years, we were doing ecological solutions, but we found that no matter what you do, it is a pretty labour intensive process, says Laurel Maloney, director of marketing for the company. We wanted something easier and something that would make it so that the user could actually be their own bug buster.

The bed has gone through five trials, and the company is finalizing certification from the Canadian Standards Association, and gearing up for its first major order. It is also negotiating a contract with the Canadian government to provide beds for military workers, who often find themselves in pest-ridden situations.
