Report says Bed Bug infestations are on the rise in NJ – New Jersey 101.5 FM Radio

It doesnt seem particularly scientific, but television station CBS 2 New York says that bed bugs are spreading in New Jersey at least, in part, because of the coronavirus pandemic. According to the station there has been an alarming rise in bed bug cases due in part to people not wanting to let exterminators in their homes. Channel 2 says:

"Favio Ulloa, the owner of Prestige Pest Services.says that his bed bug business is up. Probably 50% more from last year, Ulloa said. Ulloa said he has as many a seven bed bug jobs a day now, compared to no more than three a day at this time last year. He said fear during the pandemic has kept exterminators out of homes, allowing bed bugs more time to multiply and spread."

According to WebMD, bed bugs are small, oval, brownish insects that live on the blood of animals or humans. Adult bed bugs have flat bodies about the size of an apple seed. After feeding, however, their bodies swell and are a reddish color. Bed bugs typically gain access to your home via luggage, clothing, and used furniture like beds or couches. Channel 2 quotes Rutgers student Kate Moro, who had an infestation, as saying: That I know that theyre crawling on my skin in my sleep I cant. Its just too much. Bed bugs do typically feed at night; they feed by piercing the skin and withdrawing blood through an elongated beak.

However, the New York Times says that even though 1 in 5 Americans has either dealt with bed bugs or know someone who has, it is expected that the number of bug bed infestations would drop due to the pandemic as people travel less, and stay in hotels less.

The bugs feed from three to 10 minutes to become engorged and then crawl away unnoticed. While you can try to get rid of bed bugs by yourself, WebMD recommends that you hire a professional.

Bed Bugs Still Love NYC, Just Not As Much As They Used To …

NEW YORK, NY Bed bugs aren't as rampant in New York City as they used to be. The Big Apple fell to No. 8 from No. 4 on Orkin's list of the top 50 bed bug-infested cities in the U.S., the pest control company said Monday.

Orkin's ranking is based on the number of bed bug treatments ordered in each metropolitan area from Dec. 1, 2016 through Nov. 30, 2017.

While New York fell four spots out of the top five, Baltimore claimed the No. 1 spot for the second year in a row. Washington, D.C., Chicago, Los Angeles and Columbus, Ohio rounded out the top five.

New York City still took the top spot among other metropolitan areas in the state. Buffalo fell two places to No. 20, Syracuse jumped seven spots to No. 33 and the Albany area ranked for the first time ever at No. 50.

Bed bugs are most prevalent in apartments and condominiums, which New York City has plenty of. Some 95 percent of pest control workers have encountered the bugs in apartments, compared with 93 percent seeing them in single-family homes and 75 percent finding bugs in hotels or motels, according to a 2015 PestWorld survey.

"The number of bed bug infestations in the United States is still rising," Tim Husen, an Orkin entomologist, said in a news release. "They continue to invade our homes and businesses on a regular basis because they are not seasonal pests, and only need blood to survive."

Orkin recommends decreasing clutter around your house and checking for bed bugs regularly, as they're always on the move.

Bedbugs – HPD – New York

Bed bugs are small insects that feed mainly on human blood. Bed bug infestations are increasingly common in New York City. Bed bugs can enter homes by latching onto used furniture, luggage and clothing, and by traveling along connecting pipes and wiring. Left untreated, bed bugs can spread quickly.

Property owners are required to address bed bug infestations promptly. The surest strategies to keep bed bugs from spreading are prevention, early detection, and rapid treatment. To learn more, see the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DOHMH)Preventing and Getting Rid of Bedbugs Safelyguide.

Tenants should report the presence of bed bugs to the property owner. If the property owner does not address the condition, file a complaint online or call 311.

When calling 311 to make a bed bug complaint, the caller may be asked by the 311 operator about whether it would be acceptable for HPD to bring a dog trained to sniff out bed bugs to participate in an inspection (note that even if requested, the dog may not accompany an Inspector). Whether or not a dog is present during an inspection, an HPD Inspector will conduct a visual inspection. Violations will be issued if the Inspector is able to visually confirm the presence of live bed bugs.

Property Owner Requirements

The Housing Maintenance Code and Health Code both require that property owners address infestations promptly.

The surest strategies to keep bed bugs from spreading are prevention, early detection, and rapid treatment. To learn more, see the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DOHMH)Preventing and Getting Rid of Bedbugs Safelyguide.

Bed bug infestations usually require the services of well-trained, licensed pest management professionals, also called exterminators. New York State law requires that property owners hire only pest control professionals licensed by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC)to treat apartments for bed bugs. The pest control professional should perform an inspection to confirm the presence of bed bugs and to eliminate bed bugs, if necessary. Property owners are expected to make follow-up visits to ensure that there are no signs of a bed bug infestation.

Property owners of rental residential properties are now required to file a Bed Bug Annual Report. See the Bed Bug Annual Report Requirement section of this webpage for the additional requirements. Once the Bed Bug Annual Report has been filed, the property owner is required to either provide the filing receipt to each tenant (upon commencement of a new lease and with each lease renewal) OR post the filing receipt in a prominent location in the building. In addition, the property owner must either distribute to each tenant or post the DOHMHPreventing and Getting Rid of Bedbugs Safelyguide, which provides information on the prevention, detection, and removal of bedbugs.

Bed Bug Annual Report Requirement

Local Law 69 of 2017 requires that all multiple dwelling property owners must attempt to obtain the bed bug infestation history from the tenant or unit owner, including whether eradication measures were employed for a bedbug infestation.

Complete your Annual Bed Bug Report. Pursuant to the law, HPD will make the submitted information publicly available through HPDONLINE.

The online application will only allow validly registered property owners and managing agents of multiple dwellings to disclose bedbug infestation history. A buildings property registration must be current. If you have not registered your property, please do so by visitingProperty Registration.

Property owners will be required to file annually between December 1and December 31 for the previous year from November 1 through October 31.

Property owners will be required to report the following information:

When submitting, the owner will certify that either:

Once the Bed Bug Annual Report has been filed, the property owner is required to either provide the filing receipt to each tenant (upon commencement of a new lease and with each lease renewal) OR post the filing receipt in a prominent location in the building. In addition, the property owner must either distribute to each tenant or post the DOHMHPreventing and Getting Rid of Bedbugs Safelyguide, which provides information on the prevention, detection, and removal of bedbugs.

If you do not have access to a computer or email, you can file a report using this form. Please follow all instructions carefully.

Please note that New York State law requires property owners to disclose bedbug infestation history dating back one year to new tenants through theBedbug Disclosure Form. For more information, visit theNYS Homes and Community Renewalwebsite.

Tenants should report the presence of bed bugs to the property owner. If the property owner does not address the condition, file a complaint online or call 311.

HPD provides a special service for the inspection of bedbugs: HPDs Canine Unit. The beagles are available to assist a team of Code Enforcement Inspectors who have been trained to work with them. The Canine Unit will respond to bedbug complaints where the 311 operator has confirmed that the tenant would like to have the inspection performed by a dog; although not every such complaint can be inspected by the Canine Unit. The dogs were trained at an accredited facility to alert by sitting when they detect live bedbugs or viable eggs. The findings are confirmed by visual inspection before a violation is issued.

If the HPD inspector finds bedbugs, the property owner is issued an HPD Notice of Violation (NOV) ordering that the condition be addressed. When a NOV is issued by HPD, the property owner also receives a DOHMH Order of the Commissioner. The Commissioners order provides property owners more detail on the requirements for addressing bedbugs, including:

Certification of HPD's NOV is the only required notification back to the City that the condition has been corrected as instructed. There is no response directly to the DOHMH. The HPD Certification of Correction requires a sworn statement that the above corrective actions have been taken, in compliance with the DOHMH Commissioners Order. For information about completing your certification documents for HPD, you can contact your Borough Service Center or certify online usingeCertification.

Before applying any chemicals, it is crucial to prepare the area for treatment by removing clutter, vacuuming, steaming (optional), andencasingmattressesandbox springs. Taking time for these preparation steps will make your treatments much more successful. Using the products in your Bed Bug Kit, treat all cracks, crevices, voids, tufts, seams, and folds where bed bugs may be found. Always keep pets, children, and other people out of the treatment area until the products have dried - usually about an hour.

STEP 1 - SPRAY - Zenprox Xtend Aerosol

*Zenprox Xtend Aerosol is a ready-to-use product that provides quick knockdown of bed bugs.

*Zenprox Xtend Aerosol can be applied at any angle, making treatment of remote areas easier.

*Use the included straw tool to treat tight spots where bed bugs hide, such as cracks and crevices in furniture, along baseboards, and around hardware in doorframes.

*Apply Zenprox Xtend as a spot or crack and crevice treatment to the following areas where evidence of bed bugs is found, contacting as many bugs and eggs directly as possible:

*Do not remake beds or replace items on shelves or in drawers until spray has dried.

STEP 2 - DUST - Bellow Hand Duster and CimeXa Insecticide Dust

*Once your spray application has dried, you can apply the insecticide dust.

*Using insecticide dust can be very messy, so be sure to wear gloves and consider having a moist paper towel handy to clean up excess dust.

*To fill the Bellow Hand Duster, remove the black rubber stopper on top of the duster. Gently unscrew the white top of the CimeXa dust, then slowly tap the dust into the duster. Fill the duster up to halfway (or less), so there is plenty of room for the dust to move inside the duster.

*You may want to add a few small objects such as coins, pebbles, or marbles to prevent clumping inside the duster.

*Replace the black stopper so that it fits snugly into the opening. Remove the black rubber cap from the end of the extension wand. To apply dust, hold the duster upside down, so that the extension wand is on top, then gently squeeze the bellows between the thumb and fingers.

*Apply CimeXa Dust to voids and other hidden areas where it will not be disturbed, such as:

*Be careful to avoid over-dusting. CimeXa Dust is very fine, and it only takes an extremely small amount to kill a bed bug.

*If dust escapes into open areas, simply wipe up the excess dust with a moist paper towel.

*Do not apply dust as a broadcast or in open areas where it will be moved around as it can become an irritant.

STEP 3 - CONTACT KILL - Sterifab

*Sterifab does not require dilution, but you should shake the container well before spraying.

*Sterifab will kill bed bugs and other insects on contact only, so it is only active when it is wet.

*Because of this short action, you can apply Sterifab almost anywhere bed bugs are found.

*Use Sterifab in areas where you see live bed bugs, especially where you cannot use residual products, such as:

*Sterifab will stay active as an insecticide, virucide, fungicide, bactericide, mildewcide, germicide, etc. as long as it is wet. Sterifab leaves no residual after it has dried.

*Do not apply to clothing items or directly to people or animals.

*Use as needed to spot treat live insects.

STEP 4 - TREAT CLOTHING AND LINENS

*Although this step does not NOT involve any chemicals in your kit, it is a crucial part of your treatment.

*Clothing, linens, or other fabric items in the infested rooms should be removed in bags, then washed and dried or dry cleaned.

*Do not return items to the infested areas until there has been no evidence of bed bugs for 30 days.

*Failure to make sure all items being returned to the room are bedbug free may cause a reinfestation.

STEP 5 - REPEAT! REPEAT! REPEAT!

*Repeat Step 1 (Zenprox XtendAerosol) every 7-10 days days until no one is getting bitten and there is no further evidence such as live bugs, cast skins or fresh blood spots found. This is absolutely crucial! Depending on the severity of the infestation it can take a minimum of 7-8 weeks, including repeat treatments. Failure to be thorough can prolong the bed bug control process and can make it harder to eliminate them.

*Use Sterifab as frequently as needed to kill live bugs on contact.
