K9 Bed Bug Detection – Orkin Canada

Home Bed Bugs Bed Bug Dogs

Every day mans best friend is hard at work helping us in the battle against bed bugs! Their amazingly sensitive nose makes them the ideal bed bug detection tool. Our bed bug dogs have been specially trained to detect bed bugs with amazing accuracy. They recognize the scent of live bed bugs and their eggs. They can differentiate between live and dead bugs and also between bed bugs and the debris they leave behind (cast off skins and feces).

Bed bug dogs have a level of detection accuracy that far surpasses conventional detection methods. Our K9 Inspection Team is faster and more reliable than any of the other methods.

Many University studies have shown that trained bed bug dogs are much more accurate than a trained technician. Combine this with the speed & reliability of our bed bug dogs and you can see the obvious benefits of the Orkin Canada K9 teams.

Our K9 Inspection team dogs receive between 800 and 1000 hours of training before ever meeting their handler. The K9 and the handler are then paired together rand train as a team for another 40+ hours. At the end of the course, a Certified Master Trainer verifies that each canine team is capable of discriminating bed bug scents and issues certification.Once in the field our K9s are tested every quarter and re-certified every year.

An Orkin Canada K9 Handler will sweep a room using their dog. The handler will guide the dog through the room letting the dog sniff for detection in every applicable area. Our bed bug dogs are trained to indicate when they have discovered a bed bug scent. Once a dog has alerted to a possible bed bug, the handler will make a visual inspection to confirm the dogs findings.

Since a bed bug dog can inspect a room in minutes and a human inspection can take hours our K9 Inspection Team can save time and money. They can tell which rooms have bed bugs and which ones do not. This ensures treatments are conducted only in the necessary areas and that any bed bugs are detected before they can become a large infestation.

It can be difficult for a bed bug exterminator to ensure there are no live bugs during a follow-up inspection. Since our K9 Inspection Team dogs will only alert to the presence of live bed bugs they can determine whether or not the extermination effort was successful and avoid unnecessary further treatments.

With the recent resurgence of bed bugs, professional pest control services have not had difficulty exterminating bed bugs once we find them. The difficulty lies in being able to detect a small population of bed bugs before it becomes an infestation, and then, in confirming extermination of all bugs after a treatment has been completed. Essentially detecting them early is the key to a proper extermination process. Bed bugs are small and can hide in the smallest cracks and crevices and they reproduce at an alarming rate.

K9s have been used in a variety of industries due to the efficiency of scent detection. Some industry examples that utilize K9 scent detection are: bomb detection, avalanche rescue, drug and firearm detection, K9 security and in helping people live their lives with the aid of a Seeing Eye dog.

In 2008 Orkin PCO Services, now Orkin Canada, invested in a K9 Bed Bug Detection program. This quickly proved to be an extremely accurate and efficient method compared to technician inspections, which did not require the use of other detection devices, keeping the service discreet. We now have K9 services available in the Vancouver, Edmonton and Ontario regions with expansion plans into all major cities in Canada.

Orkin Canadas K9s have been sourced through All Animal Productions in California. This academy is well respected both in the United States and Canada. The academy trains dogs for a variety of clientele in both public and private industries.

All K9s have been paired with a long term primary handler and a secondary handler. The dogs live and work with their handlers. The K9s motivation for detecting bed bugs is through a food reward. Essentially the K9 hunts for its food asit would by instinct. Throughout a work day the handler will strategically hide bed bug scents as confirmation of detection accuracy.

K9s will continue to play a large role in the extermination of bed bugs and in many other industries for a variety of applications. Orkin Canada expects this to be a fast growing division due to the large demand for a proper bed bug detection and extermination process.

K9 Pre-Scheduled Detection Program The most efficient method to be proactive in identifying if you have bed bugs or not is to always be on the watch for them. On a weekly, monthly, or quarterly basis we will search a section or your entire property for live bed bugs. Any activity areas will be noted and tenants will be notified to prepare for treatment.

On Demand Bed Bug Confirmations and Block Inspections Instead of having a technician respond to the first call to confirm if there are bed bugs K9 services are faster, more accurate and can also be more cost effective compared to technician inspections.

Detection and On Demand Treatment For situations that require immediate response for bed bug confirmation & extermination. Orkin Canada will deploy the K9 Service with additional pest technician. The K9 will alert to an infested area which will then be quarantined by the technician and treated on that service. Depending on the treatment and level of infestation a second visit may be required.

Detection and preventative treatment For situations that require long term reassurance and a proactive approach to bed bug extermination. Orkin Canada will go through a section or the full facility with the K9 to confirm if there is any activity. If the K9 alerts to activity we will recommend preparing that area for full treatment. All other areas will have preventive pest treatments.

Other Applications Our K9s have been used in a variety of unique and creative ways. They have been used to detect bugs in taxi cabs, hotels, airplanes, trains, food courts, manufacturing plants and many other types of properties, both solely and as a part of a team program. We require an initial tour of most facilities before recommending a program.

Reporting One of the greatest pieces of information you will receive after the service is a report called Snap Shot. This will give you a full picture of exactly what is happening in your building. The report will include which units do and do not have bed bugs and the level of infestation, which units have sanitation or clutter issues that may hamper treatment and which tenants are cooperating with the program and which are not. A sample report is included in this package.

K9 Safety The K9 Handler will always inspect an area before the K9 can enter. The K9 cannot be taken into areas that have had recent treatments. There are other safety protocols which the handler must abide by. The handler has the right to refuse inspection in areas he deems not safe for the K9 to enter. This service is meant to be used as a first response tool in the bed bug management process. Both chemical and non-chemical bed bug treatments are available.

Bed Bugs Invading College Campuses: Expert Tips for College Students Returning to School

READING, Pa.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--

As college students pack their bags to head back to school, they might want to think about the potential of bed bugs living in their dorm room. There has been a significant increase in bed bug infestations in recent years, and college campuses are on the list of hot spots where these pests congregate, which also includes hotels, motels and multi-family housing complexes.

Bed bugs are harder to eliminate in multi-unit buildings like dorms because the insects are transient, attaching themselves to clothing or items that end up moving from room to room. Items that land on the floor, particularly clothing and bed linens, may be an easy target for bed bugs to attach themselves. A recent survey presented by the National Pest Management Association indicated 47 percent of pest professionals treat college dorms for infestations. The same survey revealed 67 percent of pest management professionals say clutter is the biggest challenge to infestation prevention.

While bed bugs do not transmit disease to humans, they can leave red, itchy bite marks, especially on the neck, arms and legs, which may be exposed while sleeping. The Rentokil Companies (Ehrlich Pest Control, Western Exterminator, and Presto-X Pest Control) want college students and their parents to be aware of these pests and offer the following advice:

Identifying bed bugs is easy. Adult bed bugs are about one-quarter of an inch long or about the size of an apple seed and resemble a flat apple seed or lentil. While bed bugs are most often found in mattresses and box springs, they can also conceal themselves behind baseboards, wallpaper, upholstery, electrical switch plates and beneath cushions in chairs and sofas.

Prevention includes:

Parents and students should not overlook this important part of their college survival kit. College dorms arent always thought of as havens of austerity, but they dont need to be a beacon for bed bugs either. Close living quarters, visiting friends and cluttered living space are inviting accommodations for bed bugs. Careful inspection of personal sleeping areas and the implementation of these prevention tips will help keep the bed bugs from biting.

Survey Says Bed Bugs in Canada are Increasing, My Cleaning Products Offers to Help Residents With Samples of Its Bed …

New York, NY (PRWEB) July 22, 2013

The bed bugs in Canada were on the rise. That was according to a report from winnipegfreepress.com posted on July 19, 2013. So to help the residents, My Cleaning Products suggested the use of a bed bug spray. It also offered samples of it to prove that it works.

As said in the report, the increase of bed bugs in Canada was revealed by a survey conducted by the COMPAS research, My Cleaning Products related. It was done for one pest-control company and revealed an eight percent increase of bed bugs annually for the past three years, it detailed.

There were two causes of the rise of bed bugs in the country based on the report, MCP said. As one of the employees of the pest-control company stated, they were people's lack of sufficient knowledge about the pests and delayed responses to bed bug presence, it shared.

However, MCP added that a local bed bug expert contradicted the survey's result. It relayed that Dave Funk, chairman of Manitoba's bedbug co-ordination committee, stated that the increase of bed bugs in Canada was not as quick as the survey suggested.

Below is a part of the post Bed Bugs Rising in Canada by My Cleaning Products.

United States isn't the only country suffering big from the tiny vampires that are bed bugs. Canada too is having trouble dealing with them. And based on a recent survey, Canadian cities have more of them to face.

The said survey was conducted by COMPAS research for one pest control company. Its collected data revealed that in the past three years, there's an annual increase of eight percent in the country's reported bed bug cases.

According to My Cleaning Products, the lack of sufficient knowledge about bed bugs and the failure to respond to bed bug presence early are indeed the reasons for the widespread of those pests not only in Canada but everywhere else. So, anyone who wants to prevent or kill bed bugs must learn everything about those critters and must act quick at the sight of them or of the tell-tale signs of their presence.

The company stated that early detection and elimination of bed bugs also makes the treatment process fast and inexpensive. As it explained, that's because early detection means fewer bed bugs to eliminate. And because, one could do that personally, there is no need to pay for a costly pest-control service.

Canada Losing the Battle Against Bed Bugs

Canadian Public Health Inspectors Warn Infestations on the Rise

TORONTO, July 18, 2013 /CNW/ - A survey of Canadian Public Health Inspectors shows a dramatic rise in bed bug infestations across Canada, with apartment buildings identified as the leading location for bed bugs, followed by private homes, government office buildings and hospitals.

A survey of 67 Canadian public health inspectors conducted by COMPAS Research, on behalf of Abell Pest Control, indicates reports of bed bug infestations have risen anywhere from 20 to 50 per cent over the past three years, with an average annual increase of 8 per cent.

"When our public health inspectors warn that infestations are on the rise, Canada is clearly losing the battle against bed bugs," said John Abell, President of Abell Pest Control. "This is a red flag that both government and industry must have a better strategy for controlling bed bugs. Given that fewer than a dozen bed bugs can multiply into 1,000 adults in just over two months, there's no time to waste."

The survey of Canada's public health inspectors also indicates that apartment building managers do not have sufficient training or resources to deal with bed bug infestations. They also cite a lack of public knowledge, and little government focus on the impact bed bugs have on people, as major sources of frustration. Almost 6 in 10 health inspectors consider pest control industry expertise and training to be the most valuable resource in the battle against bed bugs.

In 2012, Abell received a 140 per cent increase in bed bug enquires compared to 2010, with most enquiries from major centres including Toronto, Winnipeg, Montreal, Calgary and Vancouver.

"The reality is that bed bugs aren't just a big city issue," added Abell. "A growing number of bed bug enquiries are now from small and medium sized communities across Canada, where bed bugs are also gaining a foot hold."

Abell Pest Control is a Canadian leader in pest control, offering Canadian businesses and homeowners effective, safe and dependable pest control services since 1924. To learn more about Abell's bed bug training and prevention program visit: http://www.freebedbugtraining.com.
