New Research Reveals Bed Bugs' ability to transfer harmful bacteria

Bed bug bites were long thought to be relatively safe, but recently published reports indicate that bed bug bites can indeed transfer dangerous pathogens

TORONTO, June 7, 2012 /CNW/ - Researchers and scientists have studied bed bugs for many decades and have generally come to the conclusion that bed bugs could not transfer dangerous pathogens. However, recently published reports by Sean Abbott, Ph. D., senior biologist for Natural Link Mold Lab (NLML) determined that bed bugs have the ability to transfer live staphylococcus aureus (staph).

One recent report describes a Tennessee man's luxurious getaway to a premium rental cabin, which turned into a trip to the E.R. after he received multiple bed bug bites causing a severe bacterial staph infection. Fortunately, the man's infection, located on his leg, responded positively to an E.R.-prescribed oral antibiotic and he fully recovered from the infection approximately two weeks later.

Due to these recent discoveries, the Bed Bug Division of Magical Pest Control urges property managers to protect their tenants or renters from potentially lethal bed bug bites by hiring a licensed bed bug detection team to inspect their properties for bed bugs and bed bug eggs before opening their doors to customers.

"With the recent news of bed bugs transferring deadly pathogens, anyone renting their property must now take on the serious moral responsibility of hiring an expert bed bug detection team to perform a quick bed bug inspection of their property to ensure the health and safety of their tenants and renters," says Alex Dayan, manager of Magical Pest Control. "If bed bugs are detected, the best method of getting rid of them is through ThermaPureHeat treatment which is eco-friendly and pesticide-free."

Magical Pest Control's ThermaPureHeat treatment penetrates deep into a structure's cracks and crevices to kill bed bugs and their eggs where they are hiding. Pesticides, in contrast, are typically not effective in exterminating bed bug eggs, therefore, when relying on pesticides multiple treatments are often required to kill bed bugs after eggs hatch. With ThermaPureHeat, only one treatment is required to get rid of bed bugs and their eggs simultaneously.

Here's Why Renting Your Home Through Airbnb Could Be Illegal

Airbnb, the site where people rent apartments and houses to strangers, is lobbying for its cause in Washington, reports Slate's Matthew Yglesias.

The site has an edge over hotels in that it draws tourists to smaller cities that may or may not lack big chains. But not every city's OK with this:

"One reason those neighborhoods dont have hotel beds is that in most cities you cant just slap up a hotel in a residential neighborhood or turn an existing residential property into one," Yglesias says. "Big cities draw a fairly firm distinction between a house and a hotel, but Airbnbs entire business is based on obscuring that line."

For consumers, the real question is whether or not using the site is legal. Here are some reasons renting to strangers on Airbnb might not be smart:

-NYC residents can't rent their apartment out for less than 30 days, according to YM contributor BrickUnderground, though many still do. Fines start at $1,600, reaching up to $5,000 for the first offense, the site says. Check out the state's Multiple Dwelling Law for details.

-Renters and co-op owners can be evicted if the city catches on, at least in New York.

-According to a hotelier in Rome who spoke up on a Quora thread, "it's illegal to rent our space without authorization from the city (comune). It's not easy to obtain this, and in some cases wouldn't be possible at all." The same might apply elsewhere abroad.

-Neighbors could complain, leading the police to fine you and issue a violation, said BrickUnderground. There are also the issues of bed bugs, safety and noise.

Magical Pest Control ensures that children attending summer camp in Toronto and surrounding areas are safe from bed …

As thousands of children across the GTA prepare to spend nights in summer camp, Magical Pest Control and its certified bed bug detection dogs are making sure children are sleeping in a bed bug free environment

TORONTO, May 29, 2012 /CNW/ - "If you're among the thousands of parents preparing to send their children off to summer camp this year, make sure your children won't come home bringing more back than arts and crafts" says Alex Dayan, manager of Magical Pest Control.

Sleepover camps, like hotels and hospitals, can be dangerous breeding grounds for bed bugs. Because bed bugs can only travel by attaching themselves to the clothes and baggage of people, places of mass occupancy are the most common sources of inviting bed bugs into your home.

"Cautious summer camp directors will hire an expert bed bug detection team to perform quick bed bug inspections of their camps before and just after opening their doors to children," continues Dayan. "These inspections will assure camp officials and parents that the camp was bed bug free prior to kid's arrival and after the children have transported their baggage from home."

Magical Pest Control uses certified bed bug detection dogs to offer summer camps an accurate way to inspect for bed bugs. Magical's certified K-9 bed bug detection team is 98% accurate, compared to the 35% accuracy rate of traditional human inspection methods. Magical's K-9 bed bug detection team is able to inspect for bed bugs behind walls, baseboards, and under carpets without having to strip down a room, offering summer camps a non-obstructive way of thoroughly detecting bed bugs.

"As the bed bug epidemic still lingers in the city, we encourage all summer camps to hire an expert bed bug detection team to ensure the bed bug problem doesn't spread. And we encourage all parents to ask their summer camp if they have been professionally inspected for bed bugs," continued Dayan. "We also provide free bed bug consultations prior to service, and 90 day warrantees to ensure no return of bed bugs. Therefore, if camps are inspected and treated early they will have the assurance of being bed bugs free all summer."

New Dundee entrepreneurs tackle bed bug problem

NEW DUNDEE A New Dundee couple has developed an environmentally friendly trap to get rid of some nasty home invaders bed bugs.

The theory behind the trap is it thinks like a bed bug, says Roseanne Weber, who with her husband, David Weber, recently formed Be-Gone Inc., a company that makes the bed bug trap out of their small New Dundee plant.

The trap is made of cardboard and consists of a series of cavities which contain glue. The bugs crawl through the holes, and once inside, they get stuck on the glue and become trapped, David says.

They love cardboard, he says.

The traps are placed under the top corners of a mattress and are changed about once a week depending on the severity of the infestation. They also can be put in linen closets, sleeping bags, drawers, backpacks and luggage.

Used traps are then placed in plastic bags and thrown away. The product is biodegradable, non-toxic and recyclable.

While the incidence of bed bugs is on the increase in Waterloo Region, the pests arent as big a problem as in Toronto or Niagara Falls.

Traditional treatments involve steam and cryonite, which is basically dry ice, but they are costly and labour intensive.

David Weber says their product is more effective and less expensive, and can be used as an effective monitoring system before an infestation occurs. It can be used in homes as well as commercial properties, such as hotels, motels, dormitories, shelters and hospitals.

It is a very inexpensive insurance policy, he says.
