One of Canadaslargest pest control providers has released a new list that no city should be happy to top.

Orkin Canada has released its list of the 25 most afflicted bed bug cities in Canada.

For those not in the know, bed bugs are dedicated blood-feeding insects that can travel up to 100-feet in search of a meal, according to the company. In the case of the most common bed bug, the blood they feed on is human blood, and dinner time is between midnight and 5 am.

To be clear, Orkin Canadas data is derived exclusively from the number of commercial and residential properties that have received bed bug treatment directly from Orkin between January 1 and December 31, 2021.

Thebed bug registry allows people to search for houses, hotels, and apartments that may or may not have had a reported case of bed bugs. It has information available for most major Canadian cities, including Toronto and Metro Vancouver.

This year, Orkin reports that travel bans, stay-at-home orders, and a shift to remote working have resulted in fewer bugs hitchhiking their way into homes. As a result, bed bug sightings have not yet rebounded to pre-pandemic levels. Dont celebrate yet, though, all it can take is an airplane seat, hotel bed or even an office chair for these pesky bed bugs to invade your space, the company says.

Compared to last years rankings, the City of Toronto claimed the number one spot for the third year in a row. Vancouver went up to third place (from fourth), St. Johns rose to fourth (from sixth), and Winnipeg dropped substantially to ninth place (from fifth).

As Canadians return to travel Orkin suggests these helpful tips for eager vacationers:

The city has been named the bed bug capitol of Canada for 2021 the third year in a row its topped the ranking, according to Orkin Canada.

Orkin compiles the list based on the number of commercial and residential bed bug treatments the company carried out.

Taking second place last year was Sudbury, followed by Vancouver, St. Johns, Oshawa, Scarborough, Moncton, Saint John, Winnipeg and Edmonton.

Travel bans, stay-at-home orders, and a general shift to working remotely have resulted in fewer hitch-hiking opportunities for these critters, and yet they have found a way to stick around, Orkin said in a release. Bed bugs latch onto people, clothing, and furniture. All it can take is an airplane seat, hotel bed or even an office chair for these pesky bed bugs to invade your space.

Orkin noted the insects can travel up to 30 metres (100 feet) in search of a meal which for them is blood, mainly from humans and usually consumed between midnight and 5 a.m.

Due to their ability to double in population about every 16 days, it will not be difficult for bed bugs to regain their grip on Canadians, the company added.

As temperature increases, it is common to notice insect activity increase also. Because insects depend on environmental temperature to modulate their activities, warmer temperatures often prompt the development and multiplication of insect pests. Recently, several cases of home infestation by bed bugs have been reported to the Hopkins County Extension Office. According to the center for disease control (CDC), bed bugs (Cimex lectularius) are small, flat, parasitic insects that feed solely on the blood of people and animals while they sleep. Bed bugs are reddish-brown in color, wingless, range from 1mm to 7mm (roughly the size of Lincolns head on a penny), and can live several months without a blood meal.

Bed bugs are found across the globe from North and South America, to Africa, Asia and Europe. Although the presence of bed bugs has traditionally been seen as a problem in developing countries, it has recently been spreading rapidly in parts of the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, and other parts of Europe. Bed bugs have been found in five-star hotels and resorts and their presence is not determined by the cleanliness of the living conditions where they are found.

Bed bug infestations usually occur around or near the areas where people sleep. These areas include apartments, shelters, rooming houses, hotels, cruise ships, buses, trains, and dorm rooms. They hide during the day in places such as seams of mattresses, box springs, bed frames, headboards, dresser tables, inside cracks or crevices, behind wallpaper, or any other clutter or objects around a bed. Bed bugs have been shown to be able to travel over 100 feet in a night but tend to live within 8 feet of where people sleep.

A bed bug bite affects each person differently. Bite responses can range from an absence of any physical signs of the bite, to a small bite mark, to a serious allergic reaction. Bed bugs are not considered to be dangerous; however, an allergic reaction to several bites may need medical attention.

One of the easiest ways to identify a bed bug infestation is by the tell-tale bite marks on the face, neck, arms, hands, or any other body parts while sleeping. However, these bite marks may take as long as 14 days to develop in some people so it is important to look for other clues when determining if bed bugs have infested an area. These signs include:

It is hard to tell if youve been bitten by a bed bug unless you find bed bugs or signs of infestation. When bed bugs bite, they inject an anesthetic and an anticoagulant that prevents a person from realizing they are being bitten. Most people do not realize they have been bitten until bite marks appear anywhere from one to several days after the initial bite. The bite marks are similar to that of a mosquito or a flea a slightly swollen and red area that may itch and be irritating. The bite marks may be random or appear in a straight line. Other symptoms of bed bug bites include insomnia, anxiety, and skin problems that arise from profuse scratching of the bites.

Because bed bug bites affect everyone differently, some people may have no reaction and will not develop bite marks or any other visible signs of being bitten. Other people may be allergic to the bed bugs and can react adversely to the bites. These allergic symptoms can include enlarged bite marks, painful swellings at the bite site, and, on rare occasions, anaphylaxis.

Bed bugs are experts at hiding. Their slim flat bodies allow them to fit into the smallest of spaces and stay there for long periods of time, even without a blood meal. Bed bugs are usually transported from place to place as people travel. The bed bugs travel in the seams and folds of luggage, overnight bags, folded clothes, bedding, furniture, and anywhere else where they can hide. Most people do not realize they are transporting stow-away bed bugs as they travel from location to location, infecting areas as they travel.

Everyone is at risk for getting bed bugs when visiting an infected area. However, anyone who travels frequently and shares living and sleeping quarters where other people have previously slept has a higher risk of being bitten and or spreading a bed bug infestation.

Bed bug bites usually do not pose a serious medical threat. The best way to treat a bite is to avoid scratching the area and apply antiseptic creams or lotions and take an antihistamine. Bed bug infestations are commonly treated by insecticide spraying. If you suspect that you have an infestation, contact your landlord or professional pest control company that is experienced with treating bed bugs. The best way to prevent bed bugs is regular inspection for the signs of an infestation. North Bay has made the list of the top 25 bed buggiest cities in Canada.

Orkin Canada released last years annual list of the top bed buggiest cities in Canada Monday and North Bay squeaked in to the 24thspot.

North Bay wasnt the only Northern Ontario city to make the list. Sudbury clinched second.

Toronto topped the list for the third year in a row. Vancouver went up to No. 3 (up one), St Johns climbed to No. 4 (from No. 6), and Winnipeg dropped to No. 9 (from No. 5 in 2021).

Orkin said the findings, based on the number of commercial and residential bed bug treatments carried out by the company in 2021, show the overall number of bed bug sightings nationwide remained similar to the year prior, and remains below pre-pandemic levels.

This list comes as District of Nipissing Social Services Administration Board is once again dealing with a bed bug issue at the Edgewater Apartment building on Lakeshore Drive.

Board chair Mark King confirmed there is a bed bug problem in the building and senior staff are dealing with it.

He said affected apartments will undergo heat treatments.

Its unclear how many apartments are infested and how many units will undergo heat treatments.

Weve identified and addressed the problem, and are trying everything possible to solve it. Its tough to handle, King said.

There is a business that sells used furniture and used clothing nearby and these are prime examples how bed bugs can be carried.

Residents at the Edgewater have been grappling with the bed bug situation for years. In 2020, there were more than five apartments at the Edgewater with bed bug infestations. The problem resurfaced in May 2021.

Concerned Canadians are encouraged to carefully examine furniture and clothing after guests leave your home, drying potentially infested bed linens or clothing on the highest heat setting, and sealing cracks in walls, trims, and bed frames.
