Residents speak out about bed bug infestation

Amarillo, TX - Residents staying at a halfway house in Amarillo said there is a bed bug infestation but they cannot legally leave.

The Amarillo Transitional Treatment Center is a place for parolees and those on probation to stay while they finish treatment for addiction.

One resident said she is thankful for the service but has had enough when it comes to the pesky bugs. "I'm so eaten up with bed bugs that it is not conducive to my health or my safety to stay there," said Nicole Patrick. She left the center this morning and is now violating her parole to get away from the bugs. "I wasn't supposed to leave the halfway house, but I had to make an executive decision for my own health and safety. I informed them where I was going, where I would be and contact numbers so that I wouldn't get in trouble, but I'm pretty sure they're still going to mark me as absconding.

Patrick has bug bites across her face, legs and arms. She said staff at the center have taken some steps to eliminate the bed bugs, but nothing is working. "They sprayed, they've done heat treatments, they have us wipe down our beds and take our mattresses outside and spray them with bleach, wipe our beds with bleach, but every day I'm still waking up with bed bug bites."

Another resident still living at the center said she has been battling the bugs since August. On-site staff declined to comment about a potential bed bug problem and the CEO of the center who lives in Lubbock said he is unaware that there is any issue at all. He said if there was a bed bug infestation, his staff would do all the necessary treatments to fix the problem.

However, Patrick disagrees. "They've known about this problem for quite some time and I feel like the procedure to get rid of them fully, they're not wanting to do and it's like putting a band-aid on a hemorrhage."

Patrick said she is working with her parole officer and hopes they can make a different living arrangement so she won't violate her parole.

Bed bugs on the rise

BLUEFIELD, WV (WVVA) - A hotel room may have hundreds of people staying in it throughout the year. Guests

sometimes unknowingly leave things behind. It could be clothes, a phone charger, or even a hairbrush.

But guests can also leave something else you may not be thinking of, bedbugs.

"It's an unpleasant thought you know, says Superintendent of Pipestem Resort Dave Caplinger. The idea that something might be biting on you in the night and you're unaware."

Caplinger says one of the biggest fears in hotel management isn't rowdy guests...but bed bugs.

"They are out there and they travel around on people. So it's inevitable that the possibility is there, that someone could bring them to your establishment," says Caplinger.

During the holidays people travel all over the world to visit family and friends, many stay at hotels or resorts and can either bring the bugs in or take them home.

"Bed bugs are transferred they don't magically appear," says Pete Farris.

According to Pete Farris, owner of pest control plus, cases of bed bugs have been on the rise for the last 10 years. And international travel doesn't help.

"Know what you are bringing into your home. Know who is coming into your home," says Farris.

They suck the blood for near about 10 minutes and have stings that are double their body weight! It is believed that increasing number of tourists and third world immigrants has led to the spread of bed bugs. Actually, bed bugs are parasites that travel throughout the world as they hide in the luggage of their hosts.

The immense use of pesticides (DDTs) in the USA in the late '50s resulted in the quantitative deterioration and decline of bed bugs. But, as the DDTs were banned in 1960s due to environmental concerns, the latter decade saw the increase in the number of these bugs. In the past of couple years, there have been numerous complains in many US cities regarding issues related to bed bugs infestation. Bed bugs are hardly seen in open areas and usually hide in the cervices of furniture, doors, windows, bathrooms, kitchen basins, and storerooms of our houses. If left unchecked, the population of bed bugs increases exponentially.

What are Bedbugs?

They are small insects that feed on both animal blood and human blood. These insects have been around for centuries, and they are so well-adapted to feeding on human that most people may not be aware when they are being bitten. They generally feed when people are sitting calmly or sleeping, and they particularly enjoy feeding at night. Adults can survive for more than a year without feeding, which is one adaptation that has ensured survival.

During the middle of the 20th century, they were in decline in America. Perhaps this was because people were knowledgeable about their existence and frequently used pest control methods to control them. However, in the past few decades, peoples worries diminished because their rare presence in homes. In the past few years, the United States has seen a dramatic increase in the number of reports.

Today, many people are still ignorant about them. Some people believe they are immune to the problem as long as they keep a clean house. That is not true. People also generally believe they are a problem only for the lower-class. That is not true either. Any home or dwelling can become infested, regardless of how clean or tidy it is, and so that is why people should educate themselves.

They are small, only about 1/4 of an inch in length. Their color is usually reddish-brown, though they are sometimes a much lighter straw color. They are sometimes referred to as Mahogany Flats, probably because they are flat and oval-shaped. They are similar in size to an apple seed or a lady bug. Baby bugs are significantly smaller than adults, and they measure smaller than 6 mm. They are six-legged creatures, and the upper part of their bodies contains gold-colored hair. They have visible antennae and cone-like eyes.

The males have a sharp flap on the back of their bodies, while the female of the species has a body that ends in a rounded or curved segment. The upper body of both the males and females is often described as being wrinkly like crinkled paper. They emit a musty, sweet odor from glands located on their thorax.

The term given to an immature bedbug is nymph. Nymphs are small, and they shed their skins regularly before they reach adulthood. These immature bugs must eat a meal before they shed, and they shed about five times before they become mature insects.

They are not flying insects, though they are somewhat mobile. They tend to be found around places where people recline or sleep, and they generally dont venture too far away from such areas.

They generally live in small groups as opposed to nests or hives. The bugs lay eggs, and the eggs hatch into incredibly small nymphs, only about 1/16th of an inch long. The nymphs go through molten stages and grow into adult size in about 5 weeks.

Bed Bugs Infest Fort Worth Building, Employees Displaced

FORT WORTH (CBSDFW.COM) - City of Fort Worth employees are displaced from one office building for the next few days, due to bedbugs.

Eight office cubicles are affected by bedbugs at the building on 275 W. 13th Street, according to a city spokesperson. The two story building houses the citys IT operations.

A city spokesperson says about 60 employees will be displaced during the cleaning process. Some will work from home and others will work at off-site locations in the city.

There is no word on how the bugs arrived at the building. Employees seen leaving the building on Wednesday told CBS 11 News, they just found out about the bedbug problem today.

A city spokesperson says a bug problem was first reported in late October. At that time, the building was treated. The bugs came back and another treatment was performed. At the time, the city did not know they were bedbugs. A sample was tested, and once the bugs were identified, a treatment plan was developed.

Terminix Commercial Pest Control did an assessment and recommends using dry ice as the primary method of killing the bugs. According to the plan, a team of 8 to 10 people will spray dry ice into every crack and crevice, up and down every partition, the carpet and the ceiling.

Through this Friday, a janitorial crew wearing protective jumpsuits will vacuum the building to reduce the number of bedbugs.

Saturday and Sunday, the professional exterminators will apply the dry ice to both floors of the building. No other employees will be allowed in the building.

Sunday night a janitorial contractor will make sure the building is ready for occupancy.

Monday the building is expected to be open for normal business.
