Bedbug bites: When bedbugs bite, you often see clusters of bites. Each cluster usually contains 3 to 5 bites that appear in a zigzag pattern. How do you know if you have bedbugs?

To find out if you have bedbugs, you need to look for two things:

Bites on your body: If you have bedbugs, youre likely to have bites. Bedbug bites usually cause itchy welts. These welts usually appear in a zigzag pattern as show in the photo above.

Youll seldom see bedbugs, so many people mistakenly believe that mosquitos, fleas, or spiders bit them. Sometimes people mistake bedbug bites for a common skin condition such as an itchy rash, hives, or chickenpox.

To make sure you have bedbugs, youll need to look for signs of bedbugs.

Although bedbugs dont usually require serious medical attention, they can cause a great deal of anxiety and restless nights. To help find bedbugs before they find you (and your belongings), dermatologists recommend looking for the following signs near places where you sleep.

Signs of bedbugs: This step is important. If you have a bedbug infestation, you need to find out so that you can get rid of the bedbugs. Getting rid of the bedbugs is the only way to stop the bites.

If you have a large number of bedbugs, you may see the bugs. Most people, however, only see signs of bedbugs. To look for signs of bedbugs, check the places that people sleep for the following:

If you see bedbugs, they will likely scurry toward the closest hiding place. Any dark place such as inside a mattress or even a picture frame makes a good hiding place.

If you do not have any signs of an infection or a serious reaction, you can often treat the bites at home.

Bedbug bites usually heal and go away within a week or two.

Wash everything that is washable in hot water. Id suggest putting bed sheets, cushions, soft toys, etc. directly in boiling water and then, wash them. This might not work for the mattresses or the bigger things; so, follow the next step for them.

Direct sunlight helps in getting rid of them, if the weather favors you. Remember that they can handle heat; therefore, we are talking about really high temperature to kill them. Think 60 to 80 degrees. Put your mattresses in direct sunlight, preferably on your terrace or backyard, where theres maximum sunlight.

Even after doing all this, the bed bugs wont be completely gone coz they are pretty stubborn. Put all the clothing in dryer. Such dry heat is quite effective and would definitely kill them.

Use any natural insecticide, which is safe for kids and pets. There are many bed bug prevention sprays and powders, available in the market. Dont go for DDT powder as it is related with cancer and thats not a risk, worth taking.

There are some homemade remedies that are effective on bed bugs, so, you might want to give them a try. Cinnamon oil is known to kill them. Theyd actually explode at the very contact; therefore, you can fill the cinnamon oil in a spray bottle for a very effective bed-bug killer.

Then, theres Lavender oil, which the bed bugs cant handle. They dont like the smell of it. So, a lavender oil spray might also work. As an upside, the lavender oil actually smells good, thus, you can enjoy its fragrance while the bedbugs are getting bugged by it.

After using all these measures, if you still feel that you cant get rid of them, you may take professional help. Consult a professional exterminator to find more ways of keeping them at bay.

Remedies for Bed Bugs – Old Home Remedies Guide

Bed bugs remedies and suggestions

Bed bugs are as much a problem today as they were years ago, especially in hotels. Bed bug bites are sharp and painful, with a hot sting, and they may swell up to the size of red welts as in the photo at right. At least mine did when I got them at a hotel a few years ago. Fortunately I was traveling with a bottle of pure essential oil of peppermint and I just sprinkled the entire contents onto the mattress and bedding and that took care of the problem (most bugs just hate the aroma of peppermint).

Here is an old time remedy to get rid of these nasty creatures, but at the cost of having a strong odor afterward. This mixture was applied to all areas where bugs were found, including floors, walls, closets and mattresses.

First, wash down area with soap and hot water. Combine the following in a pot or pan:

Heat and stir the mixture until it is uniformly dissolved. Paint it with a brush onto all surfaces where bugs are found.

I'm sure this remedy worked, but I can't imagine how the mattress and bedroom would smell after being painted down with turpentine and kerosene! However, these remedies are for information only; proceed at your own risk!
