Bed bug treatment displaces some residents – The Killeen Daily Herald

Some tenants at Bradley Arms Apartments in downtown Killeen are complaining that the apartment managements effort to rid the complex of bed bugs is causing hardships on families who live there.

We have to sit out here for 12 hours, said Emma Jones, 39, who lives in the apartment complex on North Eighth Street with her three children, ages 12, 13 and 19.

Jones said the management company Isbell Property Management gave tenants about a weeks notice before the pest control action began, but the mother and her children had nowhere to go.

Property manager Josh Isbell said Wednesday tenants were informed several weeks before the process began so that they could choose to have their apartments sprayed or not for bed bugs. Isbell also said management went out to the properties to talk with tenants and tell them what would be required of them if they opted for the service.

This procedure was entirely optional, he said. The majority of the properties werent affected, and the ones that were, were mostly vacant, and we just decided to offer it to all of our properties.

Isbell said the spraying began about 1 p.m. each time they sprayed, and tenants were allowed to go back to their apartments after the close of business.

Jones said her concern was she had to stay outside with her property to protect it.

The thing is, I dont know anybody here, she said Tuesday as she waited outside.

Jones said she is disabled, on a fixed income and cant afford a hotel room for a day.

She and her children also had to remove all of her furniture and her belongings from the apartment. The kids missed a day of school because of it, and the family had to stay in the apartments parking lot all day to keep watch over their belongings.

Jones said the apartment should have provided a storage area for tenants to store their belongings while the apartments were being treated.

For tenants that opted to have their properties sprayed, removing the furniture from the apartment was recommended but not required, Isbell said. Because of that, no storage area for furniture was provided because it wasnt required that it be removed."

Jones said her particular apartment did not have bed bugs, but another did, causing the management to spray for the hard-to-kill insect in all of the apartments, which they are doing over the course of days or more.

Booneville school treated for bed bugs – Helena Daily World

By Glenn M. ParrishBooneville Democrat editor

BOONEVILLE Booneville Schools Superintendent John Parrish confirmed bed bugswere discovered at the schools elementary school, which houses grades 1-6, and the school had been treated for the problem.

In January, the Extension Service confirmed bed bugs had been reported in Booneville and New Blaine in Logan County.

Parrish said the school would undergo treatment for bed bugs by a professional exterminator last Friday after regular school hours. School remained in session until that point.

It was back in session on Monday after the treatment, which Parrish said went fine.

Because the discovery of the bugs was limited to four or five, Parrish said, initially the school had planned to take care of the issue themselves over the weekend, but once parents began to voice concerns Parrish opted for a professional exterminator.

I dont think four or five (bugs) is an epidemic, Parrish said.

According to the Logan County Cooperative Extension Service, bed bugs can be introduced into a structure via used furniture or in the belongings of someone who has been living in a bed bug infested situation. Adults can survive for up tosix to sevenmonths if they are well fed and they can feed on other animals if humans are not present. When the temperature falls below 61F/16C, adults enter semi-hibernation and can survive for months.

The school districts approach is in line with Cooperative Extension Service recommendations that individuals with bed bug problems should enlist the aid of an experienced commercial pest management professional. When initiating a bed bug control program, a thorough inspection is indispensable. Non-chemical methods involving encasement, thorough vacuuming, hot laundering/drying, steam treatment, dry heat treatment, or cold treatment should be considered. Also, treat any live bed bugs found with an appropriately labeled pesticide.

The Toronto City Council meeting this week had some very interesting points relating to social issues, especially regarding residents who have experienced a bed bug infestation. Since bed bugs have been a progressing issue in Toronto over the past several years, city council has decided to provide even more help to residents that have to deal with these nasty pests. This help will be added to the Housing Stabilization Fund, which is an emergency housing benefit for people on social assistance. The assistance comes in the form of helping people on social assistance who are dealing with bed bug infestations to more easily access money that will be used to replace soft furniture including beds so that they can return quickly to a normal lifestyle after having their home treated for bed bugs.

A long time resident of Midland Ontario, near Toronto, recently had bed bugs invade her home, most likely as a result of bringing a used sofa into her apartment. Exterminators were brought in the day after the infestation was reported to prevent them from spreading to other units in the building. Lori Holmes, who works with the Simcoe Muskoka District House Unit, reassured reporters that bed bugs do not pose any serious health risks, which she believes is very important for people to keep in mind. Holmes also mentioned that the first thing anyone should do when they think they have a bed bug infestation is call in a professional bed bug exterminator so that they can be properly identified and dealt with.

Susan Sperling, spokesman for the TTC told the Toronto Sun We opened a package with a jacket that had bed bugs and we decided to fumigate as a precautionary measure. Within 4 hours of finding the bed bug infested jacket, the office was treated by a professional bed bug exterminator and remained closed for 72 hours for the safety of the employees that work at the office. Sperling also mentioned that whenever they receive a bed bug report on one of the transit cars, the vehicle is thoroughly treated immediately to alleviate the threat of bed bugs spreading to other cars.

Does Bleach Kill Bed Bugs? – SniffK9s: Bed Bug Dogs and …

Does bleach kill bed bugs? Sure. Is it the smartest solution? Probably not. Bleach is a multi-purpose disinfectant and sanitizer. Adding water to bleach and spreading it along bed bug hot spots such as baseboards and other possible bed bug hovels will deter bed bugs and possibly kill any that come in contact with the chemical mixture. However, there are more practical solutions out there.

There are more ways in which bleach can be harmful to your lungs and skin than ways in which it can be useful for killing bed bugs. While direct contact with the chemical is deadly to the bugs, bleaching your furniture may harm the fabric and your familys health. Dishwashing soap can also be mixed with water and applied to cracks and crevices where bed bugs may be hiding. But just like with bleach, you wouldnt want it on your furniture, much less where you sleep.

A safer, powder-based approach is diatomaceous earth. Food grade DE is non-toxic and is even fed in small quantities to farm animals to ward off parasites. The majority of DE is made of silica, the same material that makes up glass. Carefully laid out DE is akin to scattered, ultra-sharp shards of glass through which bed bugs walk and can get fatal lacerations.

The downside to this is that laying out DE is a somewhat meticulous, time-consuming process best left to those knowledgeable about the substance. Piling on DE against your baseboards and on your furniture will simply make bed bugs avoid the large pile of razor-sharp particles. If, however, it is applied carefully and in select quantities to key locations, including your mattress, DE can be a useful mitigation agent. It will also be far safer to breathe in (in small quantities) than bleach or dishwashing soap.

So, does bleach kill bed bugs? Yes. A bleach mixture, if laid out in all the areas where bed bugs might be hiding, will certainly kill off some bed bugs. However, that much bleach will most likely be detrimental to the air you breathe. DE, on the other hand, is a healthier and equally effective bed bug killing agent.

Be aware, though, that both substances only mitigate a bed bug problem. More proactive measures have to be taken: washing clothes, steaming furniture, sealing items, and ultimately, a complete solution like a full-on heat treatment. According to Sniff K9s FAQ page, bed bugs cannot withstand temperatures of 122 degrees Fahrenheit or more.

While food grade DE and bleach do work at deterring and killing individual bed bugs, only a complete bed bug solution, like a professional heat treatment, can guarantee the extermination of all bed bugs in a home. Remember: Only one egg is required to start an infestation, so eradicating a handful of bed bugs simply wont solve the problem of an infestation. If you are unsure whether you have bed bugs or the level of the infestation present, its best to call a professional for an inspection.
