How To Identify A Bed Bug Infestation

Appearance - Bed bugs are small, usually only 4 - 5 millimeters in length. They have flat, oval shaped bodies. Bed bugs are usually light brown or reddish brown in color but will have a bright red abdomen immediately following a meal.

Behavior - Bed bugs leave straight rows of small itchy bumps on your body. Bed bug bites can cause itchy spots which can lead to infection if continuously scratched. Bed bugs can also bite pets in the home. Some people may not react to bed bugs bites, so while one person sleeping in an infested bed may show bites, another may not. Carefully check your bedding, take off all sheets, and inspect the mattress, paying close attention to the seams. If you see small rust colored, black or brown spots, these may be bed bug droppings. Bed bug droppings are made of digested blood, usually about the size of a felt tipped marker dot. You may also see bed bug skins that have previously been shed. Bed bugs can survive for up to a year without feeding.

There are many different ways you can get a bed bug infestation in your New Jersey home. Contrary to popular belief, bed bug cases do not just affect people in unclean living conditions. Purchasing pre-owned furniture, travel, and unknowingly visiting an affected home are common origins of a bed bug problem. In apartments, often one apartment with a New Jersey bed bug problem can spread the bugs to neighbors.

Do not feel embarrassed about a bed bug infestation. Many times it is beyond your control. We are here to help make sure your home will be bed bug-free by the end of our New Jersey bed bug treatment.

You have probably heard the old saying:

Sleep tight. Dont let the bed bugs bite.

Unfortunately, bed bugs have made a big resurgence in the U.S. Although their name comes from their tendency to live on or near our beds, bed bugs can be found living throughout homes, apartments, nursing homes, office buildings, retail stores and many other places people gather. They do not fly or jump, but they can move quickly over floors, walls, ceilings, and furniture.

Bed bugs are small, flat, oval, reddish brown, wingless insects that feed on the blood of humans and other mammals. Adult bed bugs are approximately 1/4 inch in length, about the size of an apple seed. A female bed bugs can lay up to five eggs at a time and five hundred during her lifetime. A bed bug can live up to 12 months without a blood meal. Since bed bugs are mostly active at night, frequent daytime sightings in a residence may indicate a heavy infestation.

Bed bugs are excellent hitchhikers and are easily spread by moving beds, furniture, luggage, clothes, or other possessions from one location to another. Anyone who comes into contact with bed bugs or their eggs can unknowingly carry them into their home or workplace. Infestations are not tied to unsanitary living conditions; even world-class hotels have reported bed bug problems.

Bed bugs are primarily a nuisance to humans and are not known to transmit disease. However, infestations can cause severe psychological and emotional stress. Bites can cause welts which may become infected by excessive scratching.

Check for bed bugs or eggs on the seams, tufts, or folds of furniture, mattresses, on bed frames and behind head boards. Bed bugs or eggs may also be found behind baseboards, pictures, windows, door casings, loose wall paper, drapery, cracks in plaster, behind electrical wall plates, and even in electronic devices, like televisions, phones and radios. They do typically prefer fabric, wood and paper surfaces over plastic or metal.

Usually, the first sign of a bed bug infestation is the appearance of small black or rusty spots on your mattresses and bed linens. These are bed bug droppings and blood spots.

Bed bugs feed on any bare skin exposed while sleeping. Red itchy welts are an indication of an infestation. Bed bug bites occur when the bed bug is actually drawing blood. It may take several days for a welt to appear from a bed bug bite. Since approximately 30% of the population has no reaction to bed bug bites, identifying a potential infestation is more difficult.

The infected person should resist the urge to scratch the bites, as this may intensify the itching and cause an infection. Some people have adverse reactions to bed bug bites and may need to seek medical assistance.

Complete elimination of a bed bug infestation may be difficult without the services of a knowledgeable licensed pest control operator. It may take numerous treatments to gain control of an infestation. Pesticides labeled for use against bed bugs are available over the counter and may provide effective control. Remember to carefully follow all directions on pesticide labels. Do-it-yourself measures used by homeowners and renters sometimes cause more problems than benefits.

Although directly spraying bed bugs with diluted rubbing alcohol can kill them, DO NOT spray alcohol on any absorbent item, such as clothing, drapery or bedding, or on any item or area that may be near an open flame. You should also never use bleach in areas you have treated with a pesticide. Bleach can convert some pesticides into more toxic forms that could result in a harmful exposure to your family.

An extensive heat treatment of your home or apartment may be necessary if numerous rooms or parts of the dwelling are infested.

Bed bugs are best treated using a combination of practices, including inspection, monitoring, reducing clutter, using physical barriers, and carefully applying pesticides if needed. This type of comprehensive pest control strategy is called Integrated Pest Management (IPM). This approach includes a number of activities any homeowner or renter can do, such as:

If you believe you or a family member has become ill from a pesticide exposure, you should call your local Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222 or your local hospital emergency room. For additional information on pesticides, you can also contact the National Pesticide Information Center at 1-800-858-7378 or the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Information Line at 1-800-CDC-INFO.

If you believe your pet has become ill from a pesticide exposure, contact your local veterinarian or call the National Animal Poison Control Center at 1-888-426-4435.

To report the possible misuse of a pesticide in the State of Ohio, contact the Ohio Department of Agriculture at 1-800-282-1955.

Bedbug situation in Whitehorse building … – yukon-news.com

Gabriel Smarch doesnt trust his mattress, couch or floor.

Instead, the longtime resident of an apartment in Whitehorses McIntyre subdivision has been sleeping on the tall wooden table in his kitchen, surrounded by a circle of diatomaceous earth, in an attempt to avoid what he says is his buildings long-standing bedbug problem.

But around 1:30 a.m. on Jan. 18, on what he thought was the relative safety of the table, he felt something crawling on him.

I just about fell off last night when that fucking bug was on my neck, Smarch told a reporter who visited his apartment on OBrien Road, pointing to the now-dead bedbug hed placed in the plastic lid of a disposable coffee cup.

I need something done. This is not good.

But with bedbugs notoriously difficult to eliminate, especially in multi-unit buildings, what actually can be done is another issue.

The News spoke to several other residents in Smarchs building who confirmed bedbug infestations have been persisting for years and appear to be afflicting units to different degrees.

One resident, who didnt want to be named, told the News that he saw a bedbug crawl out of his couch a few years ago and immediately tossed the couch over his balcony. Hes kept his clothes and other fabrics in tied-up plastic bags every since. Another resident reported seeing bedbugs in his unit every few months.

The residents, including Smarch, confirmed that Kwanlin Dn First Nation (KDFN) has paid for multiple pest control service treatments, but that the bedbugs keep returning despite their cleaning and preventative measures. Over the 15 years hes lived in the building, Smarch said hes thrown out all his furniture and clothing five or six times and is getting ready to toss his couch and mattress again. His clothing, contained in a hockey bag, appears to be unaffected for now.

KDFN spokesperson Chris Madden said the last bedbug complaint on record for Smarchs building is October 2016, when a work order was issued. All complaints are logged, Madden said, whether someone makes the complaint in person or over the phone, and on top of paying for pest control treatments, the First Nations community services department provides citizens with plastic bags, mattress covers and extra cleaning services when it becomes aware of a bedbug situation.

In a later email, Madden said KDFN has spent more than $8,000 on pest control services in the 2017-2018 fiscal year, not including an additional $1,000 spent on training.

Smarch confirmed that his unit was treated for bedbugs in October 2016, but said that his recent complaints to members of KDFNs health and community services departments, including ones he made as recently as this week, havent resulted in any action.

Klondike Pest Controls Calvin Gillings, whose clients include KDFN, said ongoing bedbug infestations are an issue across Whitehorse in part because of how the buildings here are constructed.

Here, its all timber frame, everything, so it makes it a little easier for them to move from one unit to another, he said. He added that its not unusual at all for bedbugs to persist in one location for over a decade, and that long infestations can mainly be attributed to tenants not following preventative measures.

Its unfortunate because if youve got, say, an apartment that holds 30 people but, say, three people are uncooperative, those three people will cause that issue to repeat itself because theyre not doing what needs to be done to deal with the problem, he said.

Ive done huge inspections on a building, like every single unit, and we end up finding, Oh, the nest is over here, and we approach the person and they dont even realize they have bedbugs. They were living in it and not even realizing because sometimes, you dont react to the bites. So sometimes there are legitimate reasons why people neglect it, sometimes its just people hoarding.

Smarch, though, in his almost bare apartment, said he doesnt know what else he can do. With his limited income, leaving ist really an option, but the idea of staying any longer is becoming intolerable, too.

Honestly, I dont know what the fuck Im going to do after this, he said. I dont know.
