Bed Bugs found in Brooklyn Children’s Museum | How to kill Bed …

December 29th, 2012 by admin

An outbreak of bed bugs have been found in the Brooklyn Childrens Museum. The affected area was treated on Aug. 16th without closing, according to the Daily News.

Exterminators treated a reading chair in Totally Tots, an area for children four and under, using dogs to sniff out the source, as well as a mezannine. On a follow up visit on Aug. 20, two more museum locationsyieldedlive bugs.

This type of treatment was ineffective. After the treatment, Colleen Lynch, 47, reported that, even after the second treatment, she found that anunwanted hitchhiker had followed her home from work, getting into her apartment. After treating her house, Lynch made the decision to quit her job at the museum.

I found it intolerable to put myself at so much risk, Lynch told the Daily News. And many of us are uncomfortable with the ethics of keeping the museum open and not telling the public about the bugs.

The pests were still a problem last week in the Tiny Tots section, as well as Collections and in some offices, according to a company email. The museum will treat the premise again while it is closed for its annual cleanup from Sept. 10 to 21.

Exterminating without closing a building may reduce the effectiveness of the treatment, and brings up health and safety concerns.

Bed Bug 911 recommends that a premise be cleared for a minimum of four hours after treatment, even though our product is safe to use around children, pets, and senior citizens. Although it is anall-natural spray, free of harsh pesticides or harsh chemical products, and therefore should never cause any health problems, we still recommend evacuating the premise first, just to be safe. This is to ensure that the treatment wont aggravate extant health conditions.

The museum says they have used Environmental Protection Agency-approved materials in accordance with City Health Department recommendations. Museum spokesperson Anne-Rhea Smith said, The Brooklyn Childrens Museum is committed to the safety of our visitors and our staff.

Brooklyn’s Biggest Bed Bug Scares: An Uncomfortable Retrospective

December 29th, 2012 by admin

While all of the country has been affected by bed bug problems, New York has definitely had it bad. With the proper bed bug treatment, any site can eliminate bed bugs. If left untreated though - whether in the summer or winter - bed bug problems can spread, and are sure to affect anyone involved

Source: The L Magazine

Ok, it's sad, summer's technically over. Shed a tear, slather on some aloe vera, etc etc. But you know what we never miss about the warmest, funnest time of the year? All the goddamn bedbugs. Those little terrors are everywhere, and they thrive in the heat, hitting their peak in 80-degree weather.

You may have blocked the details out of your memory, but we do still live in the most bedbug-prone borough of the most bedbug-prone city in the entire country, having seen a massive resurgence over the past few years of the pest that at one point was largely eradicated from the Western world. We even have our own Bed Bug Advisory Board, created out of necessity. But hey, at least they're a great equalizer.

The most recent and public victims of our 21st-century plague were over at the Brooklyn Children's Museum, whose angry employees went to the Daily News with stories of what they thought was inadequate handling of this month's minor outbreak. Museum officials say the problem has been settled and that further precautionary spraying is scheduled.

While that gets sorted, let's take a look at a few more high-profile spots around Brooklyn to fall victim. It's as comforting as it is terrifying.

Back in May, we reported on complaints of an infestation at the 78th Precinct station house, with one prisoner reportedly griping that "the insects were nipping at him." The station, which usually brings in local DWI arrests for testing, temporarily outsourced the process while treating the affected cells. To date, there don't seem to have been any further outbreaks at the station, so the friendly neighborhood drunk tank can move forward undisturbed.

The forever embattled hospital added one more item to its list of PR problems in July 2010, courtesy of one lone, extremely destructive bed bug.

After an insect was found on a patient in the hospital, one of their triage rooms was subsequently closed for inspection and fumigation, amid widespread speculation.

A spokesperson for the hospital told reporters at the time, "There is no infestation. We are talking about one patient," shortly before asking the journalists to leave the hospital's grounds.

After Bedbugs Found at Brooklyn Children’s Museum, Experts Give …

December 29th, 2012 by admin

Following a report of a bedbug infestation at the Brooklyn Children's Museum by the New York Daily News last night, the museum released a statement saying that the bedbugs are gone and that it's safe for people to visit.

Patch consulted three bedbug experts who said that while it's not necessarily a sure thing yet that the bugs are gone, it is certainly safe to visit.

An exterminator was brought in on August 16 after a bedbug was found in a mezzanine office. Bedbugs were also found near a reading chair in Totally Tots, a section for children under 4. The museum was treated and re-opened the next day, according to the Daily News.

A second visit from the exterminator on Aug. 20, unearthed bedbugs in two more locations at the museum.

But museum officials said the building now "has no bedbugs" in a statment released today:

The Brooklyn Children's Museum is committed to the safety of our visitors and our staff. In response to this incident we have had a certified extermination firm inspect our facility on several occasionsover the past two weeks. We have followed their recommendations, aswell as those outlined by the City's Health Department. These includeimmediate treatment of infested areas, which were primarily inaccessibleto the public. All treatments occurred during evening hours, took effect2-3 hours after application, and used EPA-approved materials that arenot harmful to children.

As part of our response we disposed of items that are susceptible toinfestation, as a supplement to our daily and evening cleaning andsanitization routine. We will be adding more frequent bed buginspections to our building-wide maintenance routine.

The building will be closed to the public from September 10- 21, 2012for our yearly fall cleaning. While we refresh our exhibits we will alsofumigate the building. This additional step will serve as an extraprecaution.

We affirm that the museum does not have bed bugs and is safe forvisitors - and we will be open this weekend for all scheduled events.

The Daily News reports that many workers at the museum were uncomfortable with how the museum handled the infestation.
