DETROIT -- A man trying to kill bedbugs set himself and his apartment on fire.

The Detroit Free Press reports that four units in the Midtown building were destroyed by flames last weekend and about two dozen others suffered water damage.

A city official tells the newspaper that the man sprayed himself and his sofa with rubbing alcohol about 4:30 a.m. Sunday and lit a cigarette.

Mayor's office spokesman Dan Austin says the sofa and the man's body caught fire when he tried to burn one of the bedbugs.

The newspaper reports that the man escaped the blaze, but suffered severe burns.

No other injuries were reported.

CBS Detroit reports that this is the second recent incident where a major fire was started in Detroit by someone trying to kill bed bugs. In November, a woman sparked a fire at the Ramblewood Apartments on the west side while trying to eradicate the bugs from her apartment. The fire completely destroyed the 48-unit complex.

MINNEAPOLIS - A 62-year-old Minneapolis man is facing murder charges after he apparently killed his mother in her downtown Minneapolis apartment last Friday.

Michael Gallagher was charged Monday with second-degree murder in the death of 89-year-old Patricia Ann Gallagher in her apartment Friday morning, reports CBS Minnesota. He is expected to make his first appearance in Hennepin County Court Tuesday morning.

According to the charges, Michael Gallagher called 911 and told authorities he had killed his mother. He surrendered to officers at the scene shortly after 9 a.m.

The complaint states he showed up to his mother's apartment at 111 Marquette Avenue last Thursday to help her with cleaning and other chores. He told officers he was despondent over bedbugs in the apartment and nothing he used could get rid of them. He said he was also convinced her landlord wouldn't be renewing her lease and she had several things he would have to help her move.

According to the complaint, there was a sculpture of Michael Gallagher in the apartment. He grabbed it and started beating her on the head with it. He also tried smothering her with a pillow, strangling her with his hands and suffocating her with a garbage bag.

Tiny blood-sucking bedbugs have become an epidemic in New York City. The little pests have invaded even the cleanest and most expensive apartments in neighborhoods around New York. In fact, a councilwoman from the Upper West Side has called for a citywide bedbug task force to address the problem.

During feeding, the bedbug's proboscis pierces the skin of its victim, injecting bedbug saliva (double ewww). Bedbugs typically feed for five to ten minutes at a time. As the little critter fills with blood, its colouring changes from light brown to rustred.

Experts suggest washing bedbug bites with antiseptic soap to avoid infection. The itching can be treated with calamine lotion or anaesthetic creams.

Aside from those nasty bites, other signs that bedbugs may have moved in include:

They also spread through mattresses. Reconditioned mattresses, which are refurbished old mattresses, often spread bedbugs into stores and homes. In addition, bedbugs can spread when old and new mattresses are transported in the same truck.

Experts say bedbugs have been all but dormant for decades. The recent comeback is said to be primarily the result of increased global travel, along with the banning of potent pesticides like DDT.
