The FDNYresponded to a five-alarm fire in the University Heights section of The Bronx on Wednesday. At least seven stores including a supermarket at University Place and West BurnsideAve. were affected.The fire broke out at about 5:30 a.m.At least 168 firefighters were on the scene.No injuries were reported.

Some volunteers are called "angels" and for good reason. Donning Santa hats, these volunteers -- strangers -- paid off the layaway plans for Kmart customers in the Bronx this week. For one woman, the timing felt like it was heaven sent: she just lost much of her belongings in a fire. These "layaway angels" are part of the nonprofit group Pay Away the Layaway.
