Vancouver, Surrey among most bedbug-infested cities in Canada – Comox Valley Record

Bed bugs are tiny, yet can become such a nuisance in an otherwise happy home.

With summer season the ideal time for travel, pest control company Orkin Canada released a list Tuesday of the top 25 Canadian cities dealing with the unwelcome visitors.

RELATED: Problem plagued Maple Ridge home to be torn down

The rankings were based on all the companys bed bug treatments at residential and commercial properties from July 1, 2016 to June 30 of this year.

Toronto may appear to be the natioanl capital for the pests, but Vancouver made the list at No. 3 as the best of the worst in B.C.

Surrey also clinched the top 20 spot and Burnaby was the 21st worst for the troublesome little critters.

The top 10 cities were:

Entomologists say having a clean room does not prevent bed bugs, which can each lay up to five eggs in one day.

Orkin suggests keeping all luggage elevated while youre on vacation and away from soft furnishings.

RELATED: Bedbugs are here to stay what can we do about it?

Upon returning home, luggage should be left in the garage and all clothing run through the dryer at the highest appropriate temperature for 15 minutes.

To find bed bugs, homeowners can inspect beds, soft furnishings and framed pictures thoroughly and look for insects, blood stains, dead bugs and eggs.

APH responds to Orkin’s bed bug cities list – Sault Star

Summer is the perfect time for travel, but be careful about bringing home unwanted guests to the house, especially those that can crawl into the bedroom.

Bed bugs are extremely efficient hitch hikers. They can move easily across a room and climb onto luggage or anything left on a bed in just one night, Orkin Canada wrote in a release, warning travellers to be vigilant about the accommodation they stay in.

The pest control company has recently released its list of top 25 bed bugs-infested cities in Canada. The data was compiled from the number of residential and commercial bed bug treatments they performed annually until June 30 this year.

The itchy list puts Sault Ste. Marie at number 23, while neighbouring city Sudbury lands at eight.

The top five:

1. Toronto

2. Winnipeg

3. Vancouver

4. Ottawa

5. St. Johns.

In response to the Orkin list, Algoma Public Health says they dont track the number of bedbug infestations in the city, though they do encourage anybody who has issues with the bugs to contact APH.

We can provide them with advice. Well talk, assess the situation, and see what we can do, said Nicole Lindahl, a public health inspector with Algoma Public Health.

Regardless how the creepy bugs made their way in, the best way to remove them is to contact professionals.

We always encourage to contact a licensed pest control company for bed bugs treatment because theyre always going to provide you with the best service and treatment, she said.

Bed bugs, which are about the size of a sesame seed or an apple seed, generally feed off humans at night and hide during the day. They lay eggs in secluded dark areas and prefer fabric or wood hiding spots.

As unnerving as that sounds, in most cases they are merely a nuisance.

Theyre pesky, hard to get rid of, said Lindahl, adding that the small, wingless insects are not considered as a health hazard because they dont spread any infectious diseases.

However, the bites can potentially cause secondary infections from scratching or an allergic reaction and dealing with the issues can lead to stress and anxiety.

Its best then to seek the advice of a healthcare professionals, Lindahl told The Sault Star.

For tenants dealing with bedbugs, she suggests informing the landlord as soon as possible. If the complaints are not dealt with properly, the best course is to contact the Landlord and Tenant Board.

The board will provide them with advice regarding landlords roles and responsibility. Thats not our area of expertise, she said.

The APH website has resources on bed bugs, including some dos and donts, which include tips like de-cluttering the house. This allows people to reduce hiding places of the critters and make cleaning easier. Once cleaned, it's recommended to empty the vacuum outside in the garbage can or put the bag in a sealed container in the freezer.

The site doesnt suggest using bug spray, as most bed bugs are resistant to such treatment. It would also leave trails of toxic chemicals in the house and merely move the bed bugs to other areas and furniture.

Five Things to Know: Controlled burn out of control, Vancouver filled with smoke and bedbugs – Vancouver Sun

Sunset seen from Boundary Road as Environment Canada issues a weather advisory as winds carry smoke from wildfires burning in B.C.'s interior to the province's south coast in Vancouver, BC., August 2, 2017. PNG

Metro Vancouver is draped in a thin blanket of smoke, fire crews lost control of a controlled burn near Clinton, and the city has a lot of bedbugs. Here are five things you need to know.

Air quality advisories still in place in Metro Vancouver

As smoke from wildfires in the Interior drifts out towards the coast, air quality advisories remain in place for the Metro Vancouver region. Its pretty hazy out there. Its early August, but youd be forgiven for thinking it was April 20.

Your best bet during these smoky summer days is to stay indoors near an air conditioner, if you can.

The smoke is wholly unwelcome. It exacerbates breathing problems for those that have them, and its not very good for you. But if theres a bright side, its that the thick layer of smoke has lowered temperatures in Vancouver somewhat, and the sunsets have been spectacularly eerie.

Sunset seen from Boundary Road as Environment Canada issues a weather advisory as winds carry smoke from wildfires burning in B.C.s interior to the provinces south coast in Vancouver, BC., August 2, 2017. PNG

Its like something out of Apocalypse Now.

Controlled burn near Clinton out of control

Speaking of wildfires, a controlled burn near Clinton has residents fuming after fire crews lost control over it.

Eyewitnesses say a four-square-kilometre blaze to the southwest of the massive Elephant Hill fire, between Cache Creek and Clinton, is a case of a controlled burn gone wrong, reports Postmedias Patrick Johnston.

The fire was intentionally started by the B.C. Wildfire Service on Tuesday afternoon, as they sought to burn off fuel that might otherwise be consumed by the Elephant Hill blaze. But a shift in the wind pushed it west, threatening properties.

Fire officials say that the blaze accomplished what it was supposed to, but obviously, having it cross the highway wasnt part of the plan.

Weve been doing this on many fires across the province up until this point, said chief fire information officer Kevin Skrepnek. The fact of the matter is that when fires get to this size, the use of controlled ignitions is one of the best tactics that we have in terms of trying to contain them. Unfortunately, in this instance, the winds just werent in our favour.

Vancouver has a lot of bed bugs

Lets start with the good news: Toronto and Winnipeg have a bigger bed bug problem than Vancouver does.

The bad news is that, on the list of Canadian cities dealing with the critters, thats it. Vancouver has placed third in a nationwide bed bug ranking.

Granted, its not the most scientific ranking: it wasreleased by pest-control provider Orkin Canada, based on the number of residential and commercial bed bug treatments they performed over the last year. One could argue that they do a lot of work in Vancouver because a populous city like Vancouver has a lot of potential clients, relative to most Canadian cities.

But I digress. Other B.C. cities to make the list are Surrey, at 20, and Burnaby, at 21.

Family of boy who biked to New West thanks public

Remember Bruneau Fulton, the 11-year-old who disappeared near the seawall last week, only to turn up in New Westminister hours later after going for a joyride on his bike? His family, whose relief I cant even imagine, would like to thank the public for their help in locating him.

Coming from Vancouver Island, we are so thankful to our friends and family who immediately rushed to the park on bikes and on foot and provided words of support during the search, said Bruneau Fultons mom Danica Rice.

We would like to thank the City of Vancouver and the City of New Westminster police departments for deploying all resources as soon as logistically possible, said Rice in a thank you note the family provided to Postmedia.

And special thanks to Officer (Elmario) Cahambing, New West PD even though you were off duty, you found the needle in the haystack and we are forever grateful.

Just a hunch, but Ill bet Bruneau gets a cell phone for his next birthday.

Vancouver real estate hits million mark

Vancouvers real estate market has reached a milestone, of sorts: the typical price for a home has surpassed the $1 million mark, reports Aleksandra Sagan.

According to The Real Estate Board of Greater Vancouver, the composite benchmark price for all residential properties in the area including detached homes, townhouses and condominiums is $1,019,400, up 8.7 per cent from July 2016.

But wasnt the foreign buyers tax supposed to slow the rising house prices? What happened with that?

It didnt really do much, reports Postmedias Cheryl Chan.

We dont see a great change in the market specifically due to the foreign buyers tax, said president Jill Oudil, adding Julys data is very similar to the 10-year average. We have seen a very active market continue, especially where condos and townhouses are concerned.

Sudbury lands 8th on list of bed bug-ridden cities – CBC.ca

Sudbury, you've made it to the top of another list.

The city has been ranked the eighth most bed bug-ridden city in Canada behind Halifax and just ahead of Scarborough, according to Orkin Canada.

The pest control company ranked 25 cities that deal with the critters.

Toronto capped the list, while another northern city, Sault Ste. Marie, came in at 23rd.

Orkin released its list of the 25 most bed bug-ridden cities in Canada. (Orkin Canada)

According Orkin, bed bugs are "efficient hitch hikers" and may be found in any cool, dark place.

Specifically, large apartment buildings and hotels are hotspots for the pests, according to Orkin Sudbury branch manager Andre Briere.

Orkin is not the only company noticing a high volume of bed bed complaints coming from Sudbury.

Bed bug treatments have increased by15 per cent over the past year in the city, according to Bill Dowd, the vice president of Truly Nolen Pest Control.

"Bed bugs don't discriminate. They'll go everywhere and anywhere," Dowd said.

"They crawl underneath cracks and crevices, and get in wall cavities or hide in areas, which are very hard to treat."

The Greater Sudbury Housing Corporation is also seeing a yearly rise in bed bug concerns.

It is trying to combat the stigma associated with infestations by holding information sessions.

"We know that bed bugs can't jump or fly," said Dan Saumer, manager of maintenance services.

"They're just slow crawlers, and we have videos that we show our residents. It really does take away the fear."

Orkin also offers some suggestions to make sure you're not picking up any travellers on summer vacation.

On their website, Orkin says Sudbury homeowners should also be aware of ants and mice trying to move inside to store winter goods, and also nuisance animals like squirrels and chipmunks, who become more noticeable in the summer.

Meanwhile, the Sudbury and District Health Unit is seeing a decrease in the number of confirmed bed bug complaints.

Infestation cases have dropped by 21 incidents over the past four years, according to environmental health manager Burgess Hawkins, who notes most cases come from rental accomodations.

In 2012, he said the health unit received 45 complaints. In 2016, there were 24.

"I believe that landlords and that are following up far more quickly to complaints we receive from tenants," Hawkins said.

"We're not getting the calls."
