Rich or poor, clean or dirty, man, woman, whoever bed bugs are more than happy to make a meal out of you. <\/p>\n
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Bed bugs have been found in five-star hotels and resorts and their presence is not determined by the cleanliness of the living conditions where they are found. <\/p>\n
For the 10 to 15 homeless the Friends of the Homeless shelter on Independence Street serves nightly, one thing they didnt sign up for was as a late-night snack for the bugs. After complaints of bites, staff at the shelter tried to get rid of the insects by spraying the affected areas and tossing the mattresses. <\/p>\n
We had an issue on the first of last week and we did a thorough cleanup of all the debris that was of concern, and we felt that we had remedied the situation, said Danny Rice, chairman of the board at Friends of the Homeless. <\/p>\n
One of the problems with bed bugs, however, is theyre easily transported and hard to eliminate. For instance, residents and officials in New York City fought a running battle with the bugs in recent years thats gone from places like the Fox News studios to the subway. <\/p>\n
Wednesday, the New York Daily News reported bed bug sightings on eight subway lines. On Sept. 3, several cars were taken out of service on a ninth, previously untouched line, leading the head of the subway workers union to say, The (Metropolitan Transit Authority) is losing the war on bed bugs. <\/p>\n
To make matters worse, immature bed bugs can survive months without feeding, while adults have been seen to survive a year without a meal. Additionally, theyre small and flat, making it easy to fit in small places like parts of a mattress, articles of clothing whatever makes an easy place to live with a source of blood nearby. <\/p>\n
Thursday morning, as people at Friends of the Homeless sorted through donated clothes and shoes, a large bucket of bed bug insecticide with a sprayer attached sat near the entrance to the sleeping area. Beds, made and tidy, sat along the wall for that evenings residents. <\/p>\n
We had to dispose of several mattresses because we felt it was the best thing to do for our residents health and wellness, Rice said. We had Wheeler (Exterminating Company) in today, and they do a regular service, so they were in today to check and see if there were any further issues to address. <\/p>\n
