Bed Bugs | Pueblo County, Colorado

Bed BugsThe common bed bug has long been a pest feeding on blood, causing itchy bites and generally irritating their human hosts. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) all consider bed bugs a public health pest. However, unlike most public health pests, bed bugs are not known to transmit or spread disease.

Identifying Bed BugsKnowing what to look for is the first step in identifying and controlling bed bugs. There are many bugs that look like bed bugs so an accurate identification is a critical first step to avoid costly treatment for the wrong bug.Adult bed bugs

Signs of Bed Bugs

Top Ten Tips to Prevent or Control Bed Bugs1 Make sure you really have bed bugs, not fleas, ticks or other insects.2. Don't panic. It can be difficult to eliminate bed bugs, but its not impossible. Dont throw out all of your things because most of them can be treated and saved. Throwing stuff out is expensive, may spread the bed bugs to other people's homes and could cause more stress.Be comprehensive in your approach. Try other things first. Integrated pest management (IPM) techniques may reduce the number of bed bugs and limit your contact with pesticides. If pesticides are needed, always follow label directions or hire a professional.4. Reduce the number of hiding places - Clean up the clutter.A cluttered home provides more places for bed bugs to hide and makes locating and treating them harder. If bed bugs are on your mattress, using special bed bug covers (encasements) on your mattress and box springs makes it harder for bed bugs to get to you while you sleep. Leave the encasements on for a year. Be sure to buy a product that has been tested for bed bugs and is strong enough to last for the full year without tearing.5. Regularly wash and heat-dry your bed sheets, blankets, bedspreads and any clothing that touches the floor. This reduces the number of bed bugs. Bed bugs and their eggs can hide in laundry containers/hampers Remember to clean them when you do the laundry.6. Do-it-yourself freezing may not be a reliable method for bed bug control. While freezing can kill bed bugs, temperatures must remain very low for a long time. Home freezers may not be cold enough to kill bed bugs; always use a thermometer to accurately check the temperature. Putting things outside in freezing temperatures could kill bed bugs, but there are many factors that can affect the success of this method.7. Kill bed bugs with heat, but be very careful.Raising the indoor temperature with the thermostat or space heaters wont do the job. Special equipment and very high temperatures are necessary for successful heat treatment. Black plastic bags in the sun might work to kill bed bugs in luggage or small items if the contents become hot enough. Bed bugs die when their body temperatures reach 45C (113F). To kill bed bugs with heat, the room or container must be even hotter to ensure sustained heat reaches the bugs no matter where they are hiding.8. Don't pass your bed bugs on to others.Bed bugs are good hitchhikers. If you throw out a mattress or furniture that has bed bugs in it, you should slash or in some way destroy it so that no one else takes it and gets bed bugs.9. Reduce the number of bed bugs to reduce bites.Thorough vacuuming can get rid of some of your bed bugs. Carefully vacuum rugs, floors, upholstered furniture, bed frames, under beds, around bed legs, and all cracks and crevices around the room. Change the bag after each use so the bed bugs cant escape. Place the used bag in a tightly sealed plastic bag and in an outside garbage bin.10. Turn to the professionals, recommended over do-it-yourself chemical treatments.Hiring an experienced, responsible pest control professional can increase your chance of success in getting rid of bed bugs. If you hire an expert, be sure its a company with a good reputation and request that it use an IPM approach. Contact your state pesticide agency for guidance about hiring professional pest control companies.Additional ResourcesColorado State University ExtensionCenters for Disease Control and PreventionEnvironmental Protection Agency

Bed Bug Infestations Earn DC National Ranking – Patch.com

WASHINGTON, DC Mosquitoes might not be the only nasty, pesky, biting bugs for folks in the D.C. area to worry about. Terminix on Friday released its list of top 20 bed bug-infested cities across the country. Unfortunately, Washington, D.C. made the list.

Based on the number of service requests the pest control company received during the first half of the year, the rankings point out Terminix's busiest cities for bed bug calls. The list paints an especially bad picture for Ohio. Cleveland and Cincinnati earned first- and second-place dishonors, respectively. Detroit, Michigan; Las Vegas, Nevada; and Denver, Colorado, rounded out the top five.

D.C. area residents can breathe a little sigh of relief. The city doesnt come in on the rankings until the number 13 spot, falling just behind Pittsburgh and I-95 neighbor Baltimore.

Bed bug infestations have been on the rise since the late 1990s, according to Terminix. The cause, the pest control company says, remains unknown. Things like resistance to insecticides and upticks in international travel may play a role.

Bed bugs are notoriously difficult to eradicate, Paul Curtis, director, technical services at Terminix, said in a statement. And, they can travel to new locations very easilyhitching a ride on clothing, handbags, suitcases and taxis, which can create substantial infestations in no time.

Bed bugs are noted for being able to hide rather well. Signs of infestation include a musty odor, blood spots on sheets and sightings of the critters themselves. Bed bugs are about the color and size of an apple seed.

Terminixs rankings were created by compiling data from the companys 300-plus branches across the country.

Aurora man says new mattress was delivered with bed bugs – The Denver Channel

AURORA, Colo. -- It was supposed to bring a good nights sleep to the Godin family. But when their new mattress was delivered, they say it brought nothing but nightmares while they were still awake.

You can see the scars I have from the bites, Ken Godinsaid.

He bought a new, nearly $4,000 king-sized mattress from the nearby Mattress Firm. A month later, he started waking up with bites.

Bed bugs, he said.

But how could they come from a brand new mattress? He blames the delivery method.

The truck was full of used mattresses on one side with the new stacked on the other side, he told Denver7s Jason Gruenauer.

My theory is that the truck had bed bugs in it from someone elses mattress, jumped either an egg or a bed bug got on my new mattress and came in the house, he said.

Denver7 spoke to an exterminator that works exclusively on bed bugs. He said the size of the infestation lines up with the timing of the mattress delivery, and that it is very possible that they transferred from one mattress to another inside a delivery truck.

So Ken moved his family out, hired an exterminator, and a month later was finally clear of the pests. But not from the bill.

From extermination to moving out of our house to damage Im well over $10,000, Ken said.

Denver7 reached out to Mattress Firm for a response. Below is their full statement:

Our customer service team initially spoke with Mr. Godin on July 19 regarding the issue of bed bugs. He noted that he contracted an exterminator to have his home heat treated for bed bugs, and stated that the exterminator confirmed the bed bugs were the result of the mattress. Despite multiple attempts to obtain the documentation from the exterminator - from both the service provider and Mr. Godin - it was not provided. We contacted Mr. Godin to let him know that we would not be able to cover the cost of his pest control services without documentation from the exterminator confirming that Mattress Firm was at fault. However, because, we work very hard to ensure that our customers are pleased with our service, we offered to provide Mr. Godin a full refund for his mattress, which he declined. We are happy to work with Mr. Godin to find an amicable resolution.

Apartment bedbug infestation persists after treatments – FOX31 Denver

AURORA, Colo. -- Bedbugs are creating an ongoing nuisance for tenants at a northwest Aurora apartment building as landlords across the country find it difficult to properly exterminate the pests.

Studies from this year indicate bedbugs are becoming more resistant to pesticides.

When I moved here, my son and I enjoyed it, Stapleton Apartments tenant Max Vaughns said. We [were] having fun.

But over the past three months, Vaughns said he has spent some nights in his truck to get away from bedbugs.

Pictures show what Vaughns claims are evidence of bedbug bites and his young sons allergic reaction.

Written notice of entry into Vaughns apartment at 2201 Dayton St. explains pest control crews treated the apartment on more than one occasion. Each time, Vaughns said, nothing was resolved.

Exterminators said killing the bugs is a difficult job. Roughly 3,500 homes are treated for bedbugs in the Denver area every year, according to exterminators.

Tenants at Stapleton Apartments said management has admitted that Vaughns is not alone.

Vaughns, upset the issue hasnt been resolved, said he has stopped paying rent and is facing eviction.

He plans to be out of his unit within one week. Meanwhile, hes hoping his story will serve as a warning for anyone searching for an apartment.

I just want to make sure that others are aware of whats going on, Vaughns said.

A representative for the apartment management said like other apartment buildings in the state, Stapleton Apartments has been struggling with bedbugs compared to previous years.

A spokesman said aheat treatment that is typically successful is used on units with infestations.

DENVER -- Tourists are coming to Colorado in droves this summer, and it's not just visitors of the two-legged kind.

Our state is seeing an infestation of bed bugs.

Christina Thomas experienced it first hand. Thomas was visiting an Extended Stay America in Colorado Springs and says she woke up to find bed bugs all over her pillow.

"I woke up and three inches from my face I see a spot, and I look at it and say 'no way, is that a bed bug?'" she said.

Christina isn't the only person dealing with bed bugs in Colorado.

Jacob Marsh is one of several Denver exterminators absolutely overwhelmed with bed bug calls.

"It's infestation levels over the whole city pretty much," he said. "Right now we're working 6 or 7 days a week," said Marsh.

He says this is the worst time of year for bed bugs. However, Colorado's infestation actually began several years ago. He estimates more than 3,500 homes are treated for bed bugs in the Denver area every year.

It's a problem Marsh attributes to both the state's growing population and Colorado's popularity as a tourist destination.

"Denver is usually ranked 4th to 6th worst in the nation. We get a lot of good things when things are booming like it is, but unfortunately when people are coming in and traveling you also get a lot of unwanted visitors," he said.

If you're staying at a hotel there are things you can do to try and keep the bugs away.

First, store your luggage away from the bed on luggage racks or even in the bathroom.

Also, check the sheets, mattress, and bed frame for signs of the bugs.

One of the biggest misconceptions about bed bugs is that they're too small to see. Most are actually about the size of an apple seed, and similar in appearance.

As for Christine Thomas, she isn't taking any chances. She checked out of the hotel and left.
