Brevard library takes aggressive action to not let the bed bugs bite

COCOA BEACH, Fla.

After bed bugs were discovered in the branch library on North Brevard Avenue in Cocoa Beach, it was closed for three days in January so pest control workers could take care of parasites. The bed bugs haven't returned. "I'm here every week. I've experienced no problems with anything and I don't know anybody who sleeps on the floor," library visitor Susan Quinn said. According to the experts, bed bug infestations usually occur around or near areas where people sleep. Although bed bugs feed on blood, they are not be considered to be a medical or public health hazard. Bed bugs are not known to spread disease, but they are still pests.

Channel 9's Melonie Holt was told that staff members check throughout the library each day and pest control workers are back every two weeks, in a effort to avoid a recurrence of bed bugs. Library users Khris Varvey and Nina Sworts said the bed bug incident won't keep them away. "We'll be here again tomorrow probably," said Varvey. "I think it's fine. I'm not concerned," library visitor Susan Quinn said. Library officials said the bed bug problem at the branch was caught early, when it was isolated to a small area. County officials said they are keeping a close check on all of the libraries, to make sure they don't have the beg bug problem pop up again.
