BBC Two Mary Berry Love to Cook: Star was attacked by bed bugs after BBC put her in 25-a-night hostel – My London

Dame Mary Berry is back on our screens cooking up a storm, but being on TV hasnt always been easy.

The ex Great British Bake Off judge was made to slum it in a cheap 25-a-night hostel when the show started and ended up being attacked by bed bugs.

The series began back in 2010, first airing on BBC Two before making the move to BBC One in 2014.

Mary left along with both presenters Mel Giedroyc and Sue Perkins, as Paul Hollywood stayed on.

Sue recently opened up about the realities of filming the show on the Full Disclosure podcast, where she revealed Mary had to stay in budget accommodation which was riddled with bed bugs.

She said: Bake Off can only be seen now through the prism of huge success.

But we were there at its inception, when Barrys burger vans were the in-house catering, when we were in a youth hostel at 25 a night and Mary Berry got bed bugs.

"We were a travelling show and the team had to put the tent up.

The presenter also spoke about how the show evolved over the years, with the early series focusing on culinary education to more of a talent competition.

She revealed: Wed spend 16 or 17 hours a day interviewing people in the tent who were Anglo Saxon experts about why theyd put rabbits feet in a sponge in the 12th Century.

"But it evolved hugely from the intense documentary about foodstuffs into the beloved programme it is now.

Bake Off famously moved to Channel 4 in 2017 following an explosive bidding war, which saw three of the shows original cast depart the show.
