ANN ARBOR, MI From a bedbug infestation reported in an Ann Arbor public housing complex, to two I-94 construction workers being killed by a suspected drunk driver, a lot has been going on in the Ann Arbor-area.
Here are some headlines you might have missed this week.
Bedbug infestation reported at Ann Arbor public housing complex
Madison Schankin said she noticed bedbugs in her apartment the day she moved in several months ago.
I could see them coming out of the stairs. They were in the shower, in my carpet, on anything I took upstairs, said the tenant of Maple Meadows, a low-income housing complex managed by the Ann Arbor Housing Commission on Maple Road.
Suspected drunk driver charged in death of 2 construction workers on I-94
A Belleville woman accused of driving drunk and killing two construction workers on Saturday has been arraigned.
Ryann Danielle Musselman, 29, of is charged with two felony counts of operating while intoxicated causing death, Michigan State Police said. She was arraigned Monday, Nov. 9, in Washtenaw County 14A-2 District Court.
Musselman is accused of hitting and killing the construction workers identified as 23-year-old Nicholas Andres Sada and 23-year-old Davyon Desmon-Aereailes Rose, both from Lansing.
Man accused of sexually assaulting elderly woman during home invasion takes plea deal
A man accused of sneaking into a 96-year-old womans home and sexually assaulting her during a home invasion wont be facing a jury.
Dejon Dejor Lynn, 25, pleaded no contest Monday, Nov. 9, to one felony count each of first-degree home invasion and second-degree criminal sexual conduct in connection with an incident that occurred Aug. 4 in the 3200 block of Williamsburg Road in Ann Arbor.
Stay-in-place order curbed COVID-19 spread on University of Michigan campus, but community impact unclear, officials say
The two-week stay-in-place order for University of Michigan undergraduate students appeared to help curb the number of COVID-19 cases at the university, Washtenaw County Health Department officials said.
But, because cases in Washtenaw County and the state continue to rise, its difficult to say with certainty what impact the order, which was lifted Nov. 3, might have had on the broader community, Susan Ringler-Cerniglia, the health departments communications and health promotion administrator, said.
25-foot sculpture being installed at University of Michigan Museum of Art
A 25-foot sculpture of an elongated human head with hands covering both eyes is being permanently installed at the University of Michigan Museum of Art this week.
The sculpture, titled Behind the Walls, was created by Spanish artist Jaume Plensa and signifies deep reflection, according to a museum news release. Created using polyester resin and marble dust, the art will tower over passersby and visitors when its installed near the museums State Street entrance either late Thursday, Nov. 12, or Friday, Nov. 13, barring any delays.
Egypt Covington homicide suspect arraigned on multiple charges
A suspect has been arraigned in connection with the June 2017 killing of Egypt Covington at her Van Buren Township home.
Timothy Eugene Moore, 34, of Toledo, was arraigned Sunday, Nov. 8 in 34th District Court on charges of first-degree murder, felony murder, first-degree home invasion, felon in possession of a firearm and four counts of felony firearm.
Ann Arbor home severely damaged by fire
An Ann Arbor house was severely damaged by a fire Saturday.
Ann Arbor Fire Department responded to a home on fire at 8:39 a.m., Nov. 7 in the 2600 block of Miller Avenue.
No one was injured in the two-alarm fire, a news release from Ann Arbor Fire Department said. The house has extensive fire, smoke and water damage.
Bidens victory over Trump cause for enthusiastic celebration in Ann Arbor
The news that Joe Biden has defeated Donald Trump to become the nations next president, and that Kamala Harris will be the nations first female vice president, was cause for enthusiastic celebration in Ann Arbor on Saturday afternoon.
Several dozen University of Michigan students and others cheered, applauded, danced and held up signs along State Street next to the UM Diag, as many others joined them in reveling in a Democratic victory Nov. 7.
University of Michigan freshman designs new logo for Washtenaw County Prosecutors Office
A design created by a University of Michigan freshman has been selected as the next logo for the Washtenaw Prosecutors Office, prosecutor-elect Eli Savit announced Wednesday on Twitter.
The design from Atiya Farooque, 18, was selected because it best reflects his and the prosecutors offices values, said Savit, who sponsored a contest to design the new logo.
Report outlines how Washtenaw Countys mental health millage funds were spent
Mental health officials in Washtenaw County say a property tax approved in 2017, aimed at bolstering mental health and public safety services, is already having a significant impact across the county.
Washtenaw County listed several examples of service efforts made possible by the 2017 public safety and mental health millage in the 2019 millage impact report it released Monday, Nov. 9.
