Bentley schools report bed bug finding to parents – Burtonview

BURTON A Burton school is the latest in Genesee County to be faced with a possible bed bug problem.

Bentley Community Schools Superintendent Kristy Spann sent a letter to parents and guardians Nov. 5 about a report of a possible bed bug at Bentley High School.

There was a report of a possible bed bug by a student at Bentley High School this morning, the letter stated. The student reported killing the bug and disposing of it. No positive identification was possible.

Spann said that even though it is unlikely for bed bugs to infest a school, Bentley Community Schools is operating under the guidance of the Genesee County Health Department and the Michigan Department of Community Health as a result of the bed bug report.

Spann said the district is taking the following steps:

Use of a licensed pest management professional that includes the application of pesticides.

Discreetly working with students and families who are affected and helping them access community resources to treat bed bugs.

When a student has an infestation at home, it is important to be sensitive to their problem. They should not be excluded from school.

Cleaning rooms and areas of the building that are suspect.

Bed bugs were found at Carman Ainsworth High School in early October and at the Mott Community College campus in Flint later in October.

Carman-Ainsworth Superintendent Eddie Kindle sent a letter to parents confirming that a bed bug had been found in a classroom at the high school and that the district was working with the Genesee County Health Department and the Michigan Department of Community Health to remedy the situation.

In the letter, Kindle said finding a bed bug does not mean the school building is infested, but the district always works to identify pests, have thorough inspections of schools and have licensed pest control specialists treat rooms. He said when a bug is found, it is discarded, and another inspection is done.

Officials at Mott Community College recently removed chairs from a building on the Flint campus after they were told bed bugs were found on the furniture. Jason Wilson, the colleges vice president of student success services, said the chairs were being treated, and other furniture was secured and isolated from use.

As always, we will continue to work hard in providing a learning environment that is clean, safe and supportive to the needs of all Bentley students, Spann said in the letter.
