Exterminator Says He Regularly Treats Rideshare Vehicles For Bed Bugs – GM Authority

An exterminator in the Dallas area says he regularly treats rideshare vehicles for bed bugs and is getting more and more business due to the growing gig economy.

Don Brooks is the owner of Doffdon Pest Control, an extermination company that specializes in getting rid of bed bugs. He told Dallas ABC affiliate WFAA that hes been seeing more and more rideshare drivers come to him to rid their vehicles of bed begs and currently treats up to ten rideshare vehicles per week.

Drivers either see bed bugs, someone complained, or they were suspicious of a customer and just want to make sure, Brooks told WFAA. Its highly likely they can crawl off of someone.

The increasing amount of rideshare drivers turning to Brooks for help should serve as a warning to companies like Waymo and General Motors Cruise subsidiary. Both companies want to launch fully autonomous ridesharing services in the future, but they will have to ensure its shared AVs remain sanitary between rides, which may be more difficult when there is no driver on board. GMs Cruise Origin autonomous shuttle, which it unveiled earlier this year, has two fabric bench seats for passengers and can seat a total of six people.

Dirty shuttles could leave companies like Waymo and Cruise with a lot more to worry about than a bad Google Play or App Store rating. WFAA identified an LA law firm that represents people who have been bitten by bed bugs while traveling in rideshare vehicles and shuttles. The firm says plaintiffs can earn a settlement from Uber or Lyft if they have sustained injuries from bed bugs or other pests while using their services, suing for medical expenses, property damage, lost wages and pain and suffering.

The WFAA report also referenced a study conducted by insurance company Netquote that found rideshare vehicles were, on average, 35 times dirtier than a toilet seat and also far dirtier than a rental car or a taxi. The dirtiest places for passengers in a rideshare vehicle were the window switches, seatbelt buckles and door handles.

Purpose-built rideshare vehicles may be able to prevent the spread of bedbugs by switching out fabrics for plastic. Antimicrobial materials could also be used in their interior to help mitigate the spread of germs for passengers.

GM has not said when it plans to launch Cruise Origin as a driverless ridesharing vehicle. We do know it will be built at the automakers Detroit-Hamtramck production facility in Michigan, though, and will tap the automakers new BEV3 electric platform.

Bed bugs found on chairs at Mott Community College – MLive.com

FLINT, MI -- Officials at Mott Community College have removed chairs from a building on the Flint campus after they were notified of bed bugs found on the furniture.

An email sent out Friday, Oct. 18 by Jason Wilson, the colleges vice president of student success services, discusses the discovery of the bugs on Thursday in the Mott Memorial Building student lounge, room 2140.

The chairs have been removed and are being treated, reads the email addressed to faculty, staff, and students. "The other furniture has been secured and isolated from use."

The email further states Dr. Russell Bush, physician director for the colleges Health Services office, has provided resources about this issue.

U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the U.S. Department of Agriculture all consider bed bugs a public health pest, according to the EPA website. However, unlike most public health pests, bed bugs are not known to transmit or spread disease.

News of the bed bugs at Mott Community College adds to the list of Genesee County schools dealing with the matter.

Carman-Ainsworth Community Schools sent home information with students in recent days cautioning parents of bed bugs found Oct. 2 in a classroom at the districts high school, 1300 N. Linden Road, in Flint Township.

The district is operating under the guidance of the Genesee County Health Department and the Michigan Department of Community Health.

Eddie Kindle, superintendent of Carman Ainsworth Community Schools, stated in an Oct. 14 letter to parents that the health department advised schools not be closed due to bed bugs.

Finding a bed bug does not mean that the school building is infested, Kindle said.

However, the district always works to identify pests, provide thorough inspections of schools and have licensed pest control specialists to treat rooms as appropriate.

Steps Carman-Ainsworth is taking include:

Description

Bedbugs (Cimex lectularius) are humanparasites since they (mostly) feed on human blood. Adult bed bugs are reddish brown in color. They range in size from 1mm 7mm. If they havent eaten, theywill be flat oval in shape like an apple seed. You can tell they have fed onsomeones blood recently if they are inflated like a balloon, and are unusuallylong.

Bedbugs are active mostly at night. During the daytime, they prefer to hide closeto where we sleep, rest or sit for long periods of time. Overall bed bugs wantto be as lazy as possible. It is not uncommon for hungry bed bugs to feed atany time of the day depending on our sleep schedule.

Bedbugs are not a sign of dirtiness. Bed bugs are not picky of who or what theyhitch a ride on. They are looking for the perfect conditions for them. Asbed bugs grow they molt five times shedding their outer exoskeleton before becomingan adult. A blood meal is needed between each stage. Adult females must feed tolay their eggs. After they mate, females lay oval white eggs about 1/16long in cracks and crevices. Usually, the eggs will hatch in 6-10 days to newlyemerging nymphs. Females can lay hundreds of eggs in her lifetime.

Adultbed bugs can survive up to a year without a blood meal as younger nymphs canonly survive for days to months. This makes them unique compared to otherinsects.

Unlike fleas that like to bite mostly on your feet, ankles, and legs bed bugs feed on any skin exposed while sleeping. It is common to find sets of 3 bites more in a zig-zag pattern. After having their blood meal, they retreat to a secluded location to digest their meal.

Manypeople develop an itchy red welt within a day or so of a bed bug bite.Everyones reaction is different, and symptom after being bitten vary fromperson to person. Some people do not react at all. Other times the reaction isdelayed for days.
